´Ibn Mas'ud narrated that :` The Messenger of Allah said: "Having food on the first day is was is obligatory, and having food on the second day is Sunnah, and having food on the third day is to be heard of, and whoever wants to be heard of, Allah will make him heard of."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation:
1:
In the manuscripts of Tirmidhi, the phrase here is: (مع شرفه يكذب), which means that Waki‘ made a severe criticism of him, and while acknowledging his nobility, he explicitly stated about him that he lies in hadith. However, this is completely incorrect and contrary to the statement of Waki‘. In al-Tarikh al-Kabir of al-Bukhari 3/entry 1218 and in Tahdhib al-Kamal, the phrase is: (هو أشرف من أن يكذب) — "He is too noble to lie." Furthermore, Hafiz Ibn Hajar has written in al-Taqrib that it is not established from Waki‘ that he declared Ziyad to be a liar. His statement is as follows:
(صدوق ثبت في المغازي و في حديثه عن غير ابن إسحاق لين، ولم يثبت أن وكيعا كذبه، وله في البخاري موضع واحد متابعة)
That is, Ziyad ibn ‘Abdullah al-‘Amiri al-Bakka’i al-Kufi is truthful (saduq) and reliable (thiqah) in the field of Maghazi (biographies and campaigns of the Prophet), and in his narrations from narrators other than Muhammad ibn Ishaq, there is some weakness. It is not established that Waki‘ declared him a liar, and in Sahih al-Bukhari, he is mentioned once in a supporting narration (mutaba‘ah).

2:
From this hadith, it is understood that holding a wedding feast (walimah) for up to two days is permissible, but arranging it on the third day is a means of ostentation and show. Some people say that the prohibition of the third day applies when the guests are the same people, but if new people are invited each day, then there is no harm. Hadith scholars such as Imam al-Bukhari are of the opinion that walimah can be held for up to seven days.
Note (There is weakness in the narrator Ziyad ibn ‘Abdullah al-Bakka’i, as the author has clarified, but there are authentic supporting narrations for the last portion, some of which are found in the two Sahihs.)
