Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation:
1:
This was a striped sheet which Shuqran spread in the grave beneath the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam so that no one could use it after him. Shuqran himself stated: (كرهت أن يلبسها أحد بعد رسول الله ﷺ) — "I disliked that anyone should wear it after the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam." Imam Shafi'i, his companions, and many other scholars have considered it disliked (makruh) to place any sheet or cushion, etc., in the grave, and this is the opinion of the majority (jumhur). In response to this hadith, they have said that Shuqran acted alone in this matter; none of the other Companions agreed with him, nor were the Companions aware of it. Al-Waqidi narrated from Ali ibn Husayn that when people came to know of it, they had it removed.

Ibn Abd al-Barr has mentioned definitively that the sheet was removed before the grave was leveled with earth, and Ibn Sa'd has transmitted in al-Tabaqat 2/299 the statement of Waki‘ that this was specific to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In one narration from Hasan al-Basri, it is mentioned that the ground was damp, so this red sheet, which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to wear, was spread. And in another narration from Hasan al-Basri, it is stated: (قال رسول الله ﷺ فرشوا لي قطيفتي في لحدي فإن الأرض لم تسلط على أجساد الأنبياء) — "The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: 'Spread my blanket for me in my grave niche, for the earth has not been given power over the bodies of the Prophets.'"

The summary of all these narrations is that the sheet was removed, and even if it is accepted that it was not removed, then it should be considered specific to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and it is not permissible for others to do so.
