Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to the governors of the frontier regions: "Compel the men to return to their wives; if they do not return, demand maintenance; if they still do not comply, have them divorce; if they still do not do so, then demand the previous maintenance."

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was patrolling one night, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him. They saw a woman who complained that her husband had been absent for a year and her desires were not being fulfilled. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) summoned her husband.

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once patrolled at night and heard a woman reciting these verses: "The night has become long and there is no one to comfort me; if it were not for the fear of Allah, the bed would shake." In the morning, he summoned the woman's husband and decided that the warriors (mujahideen) should be returned to their homes after four months.
