Hadith 3310
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ أَنَّ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، تَسْتَأْذِنُهُ فِي الْكُحْلِ؛ لِأَنَّهُ كَانَ مَاتَ زَوْجُهَا، فَلَمْ يَأْذَنْ لَهَا، وَقَالَ: «قَدْ كَانَتْ إِحْدَاكُنَّ تَرْمِي بِالْبَعْرَةِ عَلَى رَأْسِ الْحَوْلِ، وَإِنَّمَا هِيَ الْآنَ أَرْبَعَةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا»
Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: "A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and sought permission to apply kohl, because her husband had passed away. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not grant her permission and said: Among you, in the time of ignorance, a woman would complete her waiting period by throwing dung at the end of a whole year, and now the period of waiting (‘iddah) is four months and ten days."
Hadith 3311
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا هُشَيْمٌ، أنا خَالِدٌ الْحَذَّاءُ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، أَنَّهَا سُئِلَتْ عَنِ الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا، أَتَكْتَحِلُ بِالْإِثْمِدِ فِي عِدَّتِهَا؟ قَالَتْ: «لَا وَإِنْ نَفَقَتَا، وَلَكِنْ بِالصَّبِرِ وَالذَّرُورِ»
Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked whether a woman whose husband has passed away may apply ithmid (a well-known kohl) during her 'iddah. Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: "No, even if there is pain in her eyes, she should be patient and treat it with zurur (a kohl made from herbs)."
Hadith 3312
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ، وَحَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ فِي الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا زَوْجهَا: «إِنَّهَا لَا تَمَسُّ خِضَابًا، وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ بِكُحْلٍ، وَلَا تَلْبَسُ مَصْبُوغًا، وَلَا تَمَسُّ مِنَ الطِّيبِ إِلَّا نُبَذًا مِنْ قُسْطٍ وَأَظْفَارٍ عِنْدَ طُهْرِهَا»
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her): "A widow should refrain from perfume and colored clothes; she may use a little of the scent of qist and azfar at the time of bathing."
Hadith 3313
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ لَمَّا جَاءَهَا نَعْيُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ دَعَتْ بِصُفْرَةٍ بَعْدَ الثَّالِثِ، فَمَسَحَتْ بِهَا عَارِضَيْهَا وَذِرَاعَيْهَا، وَقَالَتْ: إِنِّي كُنْتُ غَنِيَّةً عَنْ هَذَا لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ، فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا»
Lady Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) applied perfume on the third day after the death and said: "If I had not heard the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I would not have done this."
Hadith 3314
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا هُشَيْمٌ، أنا ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا: «إِنَّهَا لَا تَمَسُّ خِضَابًا، وَلَا طِيبًا، وَلَا كُحْلًا، وَلَا ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا ثَوْبَ عَصْبٍ تَجَلْبَبُ بِهِ، وَلَا تَبِيتُ عَنْ بَيْتِهَا حَتَّى تَنْقَضِي عِدَّتُهَا»
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "A widow should not use perfume, decorative kohl, or colored clothes; she should only wear plain clothes and remain in her house."
Hadith 3315
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّ صَفِيَّةَ امْرَأَةَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَمَّا مَاتَ عَنْهَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ اشْتَكَتْ عَيْنَيْهَا، فَكَانَتْ تَقْطُرُ فِيهَا الصَّبِرَ "
Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: "Safiyyah, the wife of Abdullah, applied collyrium of sabr to her eyes after her husband's death."
Hadith 3316
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا هُشَيْمٌ، أنا مُغِيرَةُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا: «لَا تَكْتَحِلُ بِكُحْلِ زِينَةٍ إِلَّا بِصَبِرٍ أَوْ ذَرُورٍ، وَلَا تَبِيتُ عَنْ بَيْتِهَا، وَلَا تَخْرُجُ فِي حَقِّ عِيَادَةٍ أَوْ ذِي قَرَابَةٍ وَالْمُطَلَّقَةُ ثَلَاثًا مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ»
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "A widow should not apply decorative kohl, she may only use sabr or zarur, and she should not leave the house except out of necessity."
Hadith 3317
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، قَالَ: كَانَ عُرْوَةُ مِنْ أَشَدِّ النَّاسِ فِي الْإِحْدَادِ، لَقَدْ سَأَلَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ تَلْبَسُ خِمَارًا بِبَقَّمٍ وَهِيَ حَادَّةٌ؟ فَقَالَ: «لَا» فَقَالَتْ: لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا لِي غَيْرُهُ، فَقَالَ: «اصْبَغِيهِ إِذًا بِسَوَادٍ» وَقَالَ عُرْوَةُ: «السُّنَّةُ فِي الْإِحْدَادِ أَنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ لَا يَحِلُّ لَهَا أَنْ تُحِدَّ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ، فَإِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الرَّابِعِ أُمِرَتْ أَنْ يَمَسَّ دِرْعَهَا الصُّفْرَةُ أَوِ الزَّعْفَرَانُ، إِنِ الْمَرْأَةُ حَادَّةٌ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَمَسُّ شَيْئًا حَتَّى يَنْقَضِيَ أَجَلُهَا»
Hazrat Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Mourning is strict upon a woman; a colored veil is not permissible, she should use a black veil, and a widow should complete her waiting period (‘iddah)."
Hadith 3318
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا هُشَيْمٌ، أنا سَيَّارٌ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، فِي رَجُلٍ تَزَوَّجَ امْرَأَةً فَطَلَّقَهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ بِهَا، فَعَفَا وَلِيُّهَا عَنْ نِصْفِ الصَّدَاقِ فَخَاصَمَتْ زَوْجَهَا إِلَى شُرَيْحٍ، فَقَالَ: «قَدْ عَفَا وَلِيُّكِ» ثُمَّ رَجَعَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ بَعْدُ، فَجَعَلَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ عُقْدَةُ النِّكَاحِ الزَّوْجَ
Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "A woman argued with her husband over half the dower even after her guardian had forgiven it; Shurayh at first considered the guardian's forgiveness valid, then reconsidered and declared the husband to be the true owner of the marriage."
Hadith 3319
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، قَالَ: «هُوَ الْوَلِيُّ» وَكَانَ شُرَيْحٌ يَقُولُ: «هُوَ الزَّوْجُ»
Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him): "The guardian has authority over the marriage contract." And Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The husband has authority."
