بَابُ تَفْسِيرِ سُورَةِ هُودٍ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ الْآيَةُ (5) قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {أَلا إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ لِيَسْتَخْفُوا مِنْهُ أَلا حِينَ يَسْتَغْشُونَ ثِيَابَهُمْ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ}
Chapter: Interpretation of Surah Hud (peace be upon him), Verse (5) His saying, Exalted is He: {Unquestionably, they fold up their breasts to hide [their intentions] from Him. Unquestionably, [even] when they cover themselves with their clothing, He knows what they conceal and what they declare}

Hadith 1078
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ شَدَّادٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { أَلا إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ لِيَسْتَخْفُوا مِنْهُ } قَالَ: كَانَ أَحَدُهُمْ إِذَا مَرَّ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَنَا صَدْرَهُ وَتَغَشَّى بِثَوْبِهِ لِكَيْ لَا يَرَاهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Abdullah bin Shaddad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Regarding the statement of Allah, the Exalted, ﴿Ala innahum yathnoona sudoorahum liyastakhfoo minhu﴾, meaning: Listen! They fold up their chests so that they may hide from Allah—he said: When any of them would pass by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would contract his chest and cover himself with his garment so that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not see him.
Hadith 1079
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، وَحُمَيْدٍ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، أَنَّهُمَا كَانَا يَقْرَآنِ: { أَلا إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ لِيَسْتَخْفُوا مِنْهُ أَلا حِينَ يَسْتَغْشُونَ } .
Both Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) used to recite this verse as: «أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ لِيَسْتَخْفُوا مِنْهُ أَلَا حِينَ يَسْتَغْشُونَ» meaning: Listen! They fold their chests so that they may hide from Allah. Beware! When they cover themselves with their garments.
