Abdullah bin Shaddad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Regarding the statement of Allah, the Exalted, ﴿Ala innahum yathnoona sudoorahum liyastakhfoo minhu﴾, meaning: Listen! They fold up their chests so that they may hide from Allah—he said: When any of them would pass by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would contract his chest and cover himself with his garment so that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not see him.

Both Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) used to recite this verse as: «أَلَاإِنَّهُمْيَثْنُونَصُدُورَهُمْلِيَسْتَخْفُوامِنْهُأَلَاحِينَيَسْتَغْشُونَ» meaning: Listen! They fold their chests so that they may hide from Allah. Beware! When they cover themselves with their garments.
