الْآيَاتُ (113 - 115) قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ} إِلَى قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: {إِنَّ اللهَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ}
Verses (113 - 115) His saying, Exalted is He: {It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists} to His saying: {Indeed, Allah is Knowing of all things}

Hadith 1037
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي سِنَانٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ أَبِي مَاتَ نَصْرَانِيًّا، فَقَالَ لَهُ: اغْسِلْهُ، وَكَفِّنْهُ وَحَنِّطْهُ، ثُمَّ ادْفِنْهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ: { مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوا أُولِي قُرْبَى مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْجَحِيمِ * وَمَا كَانَ اسْتِغْفَارُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لأَبِيهِ إِلا عَنْ مَوْعِدَةٍ وَعَدَهَا إِيَّاهُ فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ أَنَّهُ عَدُوٌّ لِلهِ تَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُ }، قَالَ: لَمَّا مَاتَ عَلَى كُفْرِهِ تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ أَنَّهُ عَدُوٌّ لِلهِ، فَتَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُ .
Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: My father has died in the state of being a Christian. So he (Ibn Abbas) said: Give him a bath, shroud him, apply fragrance to him, then bury him. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) recited this verse:
﴿It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of the Fire. * And the request of forgiveness by Abraham for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he dissociated himself from him.﴾
That is, it is not permissible for the Prophet and the believers to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are inhabitants of Hell. And Abraham’s seeking forgiveness for his father was only due to a promise he had made to him. Then when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah the Exalted, Abraham (peace be upon him) dissociated himself from him. Then he said: When he died upon disbelief, it became clear to Abraham (peace be upon him) that he was an enemy to Allah the Exalted, so Abraham (peace be upon him) declared disassociation from him.

Hadith 1038
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: { فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ } - قَالَ: لَمَّا مَاتَ .
Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said about Allah the Exalted’s statement: “فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ” (So when it became clear to him): When he, that is, Ibrahim’s (peace be upon him) father, died.
Hadith 1039
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا، عَنْ أَبِي سِنَانٍ ضِرَارِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ: إِنَّ أَبِي مَاتَ نَصْرَانِيًّا، فَقَالَ لَهُ: اغْسِلْهُ، وَكَفِّنْهُ وَحَنِّطْهُ، ثُمَّ ادْفِنْهُ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ: { مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا } إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ .
A man came to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: My father, who was a Christian, has died. So Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Give him a bath, shroud him, apply fragrance, and then bury him. Then he recited this verse: "It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists..." until the end of the verse.
Hadith 1040
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، قَالَ: نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْمَاعِيلَ، عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، قَالَ: مَاتَتْ أُمِّي نَصْرَانِيَّةً، فَأَتَيْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ فَقُلْتُ: مَاتَتْ أُمِّي نَصْرَانِيَّةً، فَقَالَ: ارْكَبْ دَابَّةً وَسِرْ أَمَامَ جِنَازَتِهَا .
Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) said: My mother died in a Christian state. I came to Sayyiduna Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: My mother has died in a Christian state. Sayyiduna Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Mount a riding animal and walk ahead of her funeral procession.
Hadith 1041
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ نَاجِيَةَ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: لَمَّا مَاتَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ عَمَّكَ الضَّالَّ قَدْ مَاتَ ! فَقَالَ لِي: اذْهَبْ فَادْفِنْهُ، وَلَا تُحْدِثْ شَيْئًا حَتَّى تَأْتِيَنِي . قَالَ: فَانْطَلَقْتُ فَوَارَيْتُهُ، وَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَلَيَّ أَثَرُ التُّرَابِ، فَدَعَا لِي بِدَعَوَاتٍ مَا يَسُرُّنِي أَنَّ لِي بِهَا مَا عَلَى وَجْهِ الْأَرْضِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Abu Talib passed away, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Your misguided uncle has died. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go, bury him, and do not do anything new until you return to me. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went, buried him, and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while there were traces of soil upon me. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made some supplications for me, and it became so beloved to me that I wished I had all the things of the earth in exchange for those supplications.
Hadith 1042
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْأَصَمُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ السُّدِّيَّ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ: لَمَّا مَاتَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّ عَمَّكَ الشَّيْخَ قَدْ مَاتَ ! فَقَالَ لِي: اذْهَبْ فَوَارِهِ، ثُمَّ لَا تُحْدِثْ شَيْئًا حَتَّى تَأْتِيَنِي . فَاغْتَسَلْتُ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ، فَدَعَا لِي بِدَعَوَاتٍ مَا يَسُرُّنِي أَنَّ لِي بِهَا حُمْرَ النَّعَمِ وَسُودَهَا، وَكَانَ عَلِيٌّ إِذَا غَسَّلَ الْمَيِّتَ اغْتَسَلَ .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Abu Talib passed away, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Your uncle, that elder, has passed away! So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go, bury him, then do not do anything new until you come to me. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I gave him the ritual bath, then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he made some supplications for me, and this became so beloved to me that I wished I had red and black camels in exchange for those supplications. And Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), when he would give the ritual bath to a deceased person, he would also perform the ritual bath himself.
Hadith 1043
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّجُودِ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ عَبْدُ اللهِ عَنِ الْأَوَّاهِ، قَالَ: هُوَ الدَّعَّاءُ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about "al-Awwah," so he said: This is the one who supplicates (makes du'a).
Hadith 1044
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، نَا الْأَعْمَشُ، قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو الْعُبَيْدَيْنِ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ: مَنْ نَسْأَلُ إِذَا لَمْ نَسْأَلْكَ مَا الْأَوَّاهُ ؟ قَالَ: الرَّحِيمُ .
Abu Al-‘Ubaydeen (may Allah have mercy on him) asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): If I do not ask you, then whom should I ask? Tell me, what is "al-Awwah"? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: A soft-hearted, that is, a compassionate person.
