الْآيَةُ (172) قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ قَالُوا بَلَى شَهِدْنَا}
Verse (172) His saying, Exalted is He: {And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam—from their loins—their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified"}

Hadith 967
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَتَّابُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، قَالَ: نَا خُصَيْفٌ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ وَسَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهِمْ } - قَالَ: أَخَذَ مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ كُلِّهِمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُخْلَقُوا . قَالَ: أَخَذَ النُّطَفَ مِنْ صُلْبِ آدَمَ، فَرَأَى مِنْهَا نُطْفَةً تَتَلَأْلَأُ، قَالَ: أَيْ رَبِّ، أَيُّ بَنِيَّ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: هَذَا ابْنُكَ دَاوُدُ . قَالَ: أَيْ رَبِّ، كَمْ جَعَلْتَ لَهُ ؟ قَالَ: سِتِّينَ سَنَةً، قَالَ: أَقْلَلْتَ لَهُ، قَالَ: فَأَعْطِهِ مِنْ سِنِينِكَ، فَإِنِّي جَعَلْتُ لَكَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ - فَأَعْطَاهُ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً . ¤ فَلَمَّا حَضَرَ أَجَلُ آدَمَ قَالَ: رَبِّ، أَلَيْسَ جَعَلْتَ لِي أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ ؟ قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: أَلَيْسَ قَدْ جَعَلْتَ مِنْ سِنِينِكَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً لِدَاوُدَ ؟ فَعِنْدَ ذَلِكَ أَمَرَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِالْكِتَابِ وَالشُّهُودِ وَالْبَيِّنَةِ .
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said regarding Allah the Exalted’s statement: ﴿And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam—from their loins﴾: Allah the Exalted took a covenant from all the Prophets even before their birth. He said: Allah the Exalted extracted drops of semen from the back of Adam (peace be upon him), and Adam (peace be upon him) saw among them a shining drop. He said: O my Lord! Who is this among my children? Allah the Exalted said: This is your son Dawud. Adam (peace be upon him) said: O Lord! How long a life have You allotted for him? He said: Sixty years. He said: O Lord! That is little; give him from my lifespan, for I have allotted for myself a lifespan of one thousand years. So Adam (peace be upon him) gave forty years from his own life to Dawud (peace be upon him). Then when the time of Adam’s (peace be upon him) death came, he said: O Lord! Did You not allot for me a lifespan of one thousand years? Allah the Exalted said: Did you not give forty years from your lifespan to Dawud? Then Allah the Exalted decreed the command of writing, witnesses, and proof.
Hadith 968
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي هِشَامُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ شَيْبَةَ بْنِ نِصَاحٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنِ الْعَزْلِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَمَّا خَلَقَ آدَمَ أَكْرَمَهُ كَرَامَةً لَمْ يُكْرِمْهَا أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِهِ، أَرَاهُ مَنْ هُوَ كَائِنٌ مِنْ صُلْبِهِ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ، وَإِنْ يَكُنْ مِمَّا أَرَاهُ اللهُ إِيَّاهُ يَكُنْ، فَلَا عَلَيْكَ أَنْ لَا تَفْعَلَهُ .
I asked Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) about 'azl, that is, withdrawing the semen during intercourse, so he replied: When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created our master Adam (peace be upon him), He granted him such honor that He did not grant to any of His creation, and He showed him all the people who would be born from his loins until the Day of Resurrection. Then He said: Whatever Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, showed Adam (peace be upon him) will certainly come to pass, therefore, even if you do not practice 'azl, there is no harm.
Hadith 969
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: نَا رَبِيعَةُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَبَّانَ، عَنِ ابْنِ مُحَيْرِيزٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُسْأَلُ عَنِ الْعَزْلِ، فَقَالَ: لَا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ لَا تَفْعَلُوا، إِنْ تَكُنْ مِمَّا أَخَذَ اللهُ مِنْهَا الْمِيثَاقَ فَكَانَتْ عَلَى صَخْرَةٍ لَنَفَخَ فِيهَا الرُّوحَ .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) being asked about 'azl, that is, withdrawing the semen during intercourse. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no harm if you do not do it. If that thing from which Allah the Exalted has taken a covenant is to be, then even if it is on a stone, Allah the Exalted will put a soul into it.
