Abu Majliz, may Allah have mercy on him, regarding the statement of Allah the Exalted: ﴿And on the Heights are men who recognize everyone by their marks﴾, said: The Heights is a high place upon which there are some angels, who recognize the people of Paradise by their signs and the people of Hell by their signs. ﴿And they will call out to the companions of Paradise, "Peace be upon you." They will not have entered it, but they will hope to enter.﴾ That is, those destined for Paradise will not have entered Paradise yet, but they will be hoping to enter. ﴿And when their eyes are turned towards the companions of the Fire﴾, meaning when the eyes of the people of Paradise are turned towards the people of Hell, ﴿they will say, "Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people."﴾ And the companions of the Heights, recognizing some individuals among the people of Hell by their signs, will say: ﴿Of no avail to you was your gathering and the arrogance you used to display.﴾ And they will say: ﴿Are these the ones whom you swore that Allah would never grant them mercy?﴾ Now it will be said to them: ﴿Enter Paradise; no fear will there be concerning you, nor will you grieve.﴾ This will happen when they enter Paradise.
