Hadith 942
When people heard that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to appoint Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) as his successor, some people said: He is appointing over us a harsh, angry man; he will not be able to do anything, and then what will happen when he gains power? This reached Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said: Are you trying to make me fear my Lord? I will say that I have appointed the best of my officials as your leader. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Remember! Some acts of worship of Allah are specific to the night and cannot be performed during the day, and some are specific to the day and cannot be performed at night. And know that voluntary acts of worship will never be accepted until the obligatory acts are performed. Have you not seen that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, mentioned the people of Paradise by mentioning their best deeds? And the reason for this is that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, forgave their bad deeds, so they say: How can our deeds be so good? And when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, mentioned the people of the Fire, He mentioned their worst deeds, because Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, rejected their good deeds, and they say: Was not our deed better than this? Have you not seen that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created both desires, that is, hope and fear, so that the believer acts out of fear and, out of hope, avoids sin while acting? Have you not seen that on the Day of Resurrection, those whose scales are heavy, it will be because they followed the truth and abandoned falsehood, and this will increase their weight? And this will be according to the truth, and they will remain in it. And those who follow falsehood and abandon the truth, their scales will be light. And this will be according to falsehood, and they will be weak in it. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you act upon my advice, nothing will be more beloved to you than death, because you will meet it. And if you waste my advice, nothing will be more disliked to you than death, and you will not be able to escape it.
