قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ إِلَى اللهِ مَرْجِعُكُمْ جَمِيعًا فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ}
His (Allah's) saying: {O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. He who goes astray cannot harm you when you are guided...}

Hadith 840
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ قَيْسٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ: إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَقْرَؤُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ لَا يَدْرُونَ كَيْفَ مَوْضِعُهَا: { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ } وَإِنَّ الْقَوْمَ إِذَا عُمِلَ فِيهِمْ بِالْمَعَاصِي فَلَمْ يُنْكِرُوهُ، وَرَأَوُا الظَّالِمَ فَلَمْ يُغَيِّرُوا عَلَيْهِ، عَمَّهُمُ اللهُ بِعِقَابٍ .
I heard Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saying on the pulpit: People recite this verse but do not understand its correct meaning: “O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. He who goes astray cannot harm you when you are rightly guided.” That is, O believers! Worry about yourselves; if you are on the right path, then no misguided person can harm you. In reality, when people see evil but do not denounce it, and see the oppressor but do not stop him, then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will inflict a general punishment upon all of them.
Hadith 841
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ جَرِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: مَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ يَكُونُ فِي قَوْمٍ يَعْمَلُ فِيهِمْ بِالْمَعَاصِي يَقْدِرُوا عَلَى أَنْ يُغَيِّرُوهُ فَلَا يُغَيِّرُوا، إِلَّا أَصَابَهُمُ اللهُ بِعِقَابٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَمُوتُوا .
Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: If a person is among a people in whose midst sins are being committed, and he has the ability to stop it but does not do so, then Allah the Exalted will afflict all of them with punishment before death.
Hadith 842
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا حَزْمُ بْنُ أَبِي حَزْمٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ: قَرَأَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ } قَالَ: فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ: دَعُوا ذِكْرَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ، فَلَيْسَتْ لَكُمْ، فَإِذَا قُبِلَتْ مِنْكُمْ فَهِيَ لَكُمْ .
Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: One of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "O you who have believed, take care of your own selves. He who has gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided" (__QUR_N__). So someone said: Leave the mention of this, it is not for you. When enjoining good and forbidding evil is accepted from you, then it is for you.
Hadith 843
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا يُونُسُ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ عَنْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّهَا تُقْبَلُ مِنْكُمُ الْيَوْمَ، فَقُولُوهَا، فَإِذَا رُدَّتْ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَعَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ .
Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about this verse, so he said: Today your word is accepted, so say it, but when your word is rejected, then concern yourself with your own reform.
Hadith 844
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، نَا جُوَيْبِرٌ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ } قَالَ: مُرُوا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ، وَانْهَوْا عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ السَّوْطُ وَالسَّيْفُ، فَإِذَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ كَذَلِكَ، فَعَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding Allah the Exalted’s statement: “O you who believe! Take care of your own selves” (__QUR_N__): Enjoin good and forbid evil as long as you do not have to face whips and swords, but when the matter reaches this point, then concern yourself with your own reformation.
Hadith 845
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: { عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ } يَعْنِي أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ .
Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding the statement of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Take care of your own selves; he who goes astray cannot harm you" — that it refers to the People of the Book.
Hadith 846
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، وَجَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: آمُرُ إِمَامِي بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ؟ قَالَ: إِنْ خَشِيتَ أَنْ يَقْتُلَكَ فَلَا، فَإِنْ كُنْتَ وَلَا بُدَّ فَاعِلًا فَفِيمَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ . وَزَادَ أَبُو عَوَانَةَ: وَلَا تَغْتَبْ إِمَامَكَ .
Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): Should I enjoin good upon my leader? He replied: If you fear that he will kill you, then do not say it, and if you must say it, then say it quietly between yourself and him. And in the narration of Abu Awanah (may Allah have mercy on him) there is this addition: And do not backbite your leader.
Hadith 847
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ: لَا أَخَافُ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ خَيْرٌ لِي أَمْ أُقْبِلُ عَلَى نَفْسِي ؟ قَالَ: أَمَّا مَنْ وَلِيَ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَلَا يَخَافُ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ، وَمَنْ كَانَ خِلْوًا فَلْيُقْبِلْ عَلَى خَاصَّةِ نَفْسِهِ، وَلْيَنْصَحْ وَلِيَّ أَمْرِهِ .
Sayyiduna Sa’ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man asked Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): Is it better not to fear the blame of any blamer in the matter of Allah, or to be engaged in self-reformation? So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Whoever is in charge of any affair of the Muslims should not care about the blame of any blamer in the matter of Allah, and whoever is alone should engage in self-reformation and advise his ruler.
Hadith 848
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ، قَالَ: أَتَى رَجُلٌ عَبْدَ اللهِ فَقَالَ: أَوْصِنِي، قَالَ: إِذَا سَمِعْتَ اللهَ يَقُولُ: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فَأَصْغِ لَهَا سَمْعَكَ، فَإِنَّهُ خَيْرٌ تُؤْمَرُ بِهِ، أَوْ شَرٌّ تُصْرَفُ عَنْهُ .
Mus'ar, may Allah have mercy on him, says: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: Advise me. He said: When you hear Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, saying: "O you who believe," then listen with full attention, because either some good is being commanded or some evil is being forbidden.
Hadith 849
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ } قَالَ: لَيْسَ هَذَا أَوَانَهَا، تَقُولُونَهَا مَا قُبِلَتْ مِنْكُمْ، فَإِذَا رُدَّتْ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَعَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding the statement of Allah the Exalted: "Take care of your own selves" (__QUR_N__): The time to act upon this verse has not yet come. You should say this when your words are being accepted. But when your words are rejected, then concern yourself with your own rectification. The one who goes astray will not harm you when you are upon guidance.
Hadith 850
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: إِذَا أَتَيْتَ الْأَمِيرَ الْمُؤَمَّرَ فَلَا تَأْتِهِ عَلَى رُؤُوسِ النَّاسِ .
Khaitamah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When you have to go to an appointed leader, do not go to him in the gathering of people.
