Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said regarding the statement of Allah the Exalted: “Do not ask about things...” — what is meant by this are Bahirah, Sa’ibah, Wasilah, and Ham. Do you not see that Allah the Exalted said: Allah has not appointed any such thing among them. While ‘Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: People used to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the verses, so they were forbidden from that. Then he said: “A people before you asked such questions, then they became disbelievers because of them.” That is, a people before you also asked such questions, then they denied them. Upon this, I said to ‘Ikrimah: Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) has narrated to me from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) contrary to this, so why do you say so? He said: Being unable to answer, yes, it is just as you say.
