قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالأَنْصَابُ وَالأَزْلامُ رِجْسٌ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ * إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَنْ يُوقِعَ بَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ فِي الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ وَيَصُدَّكُمْ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللهِ وَعَنِ الصَّلاةِ فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ} إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {وَاللهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ} .
His (Allah's) saying: {O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist

Hadith 808
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا حَزْمُ بْنُ أَبِي حَزْمٍ الْقُطَعِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ نَاسًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانُوا يَشْرَبُونَ الْخَمْرَ، وَكَانَ عَامَّةُ عَيْشِهِمْ مِنْهَا، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ تَحْرِيمُهَا، قَالَ نَاسٌ: حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْنَا الْخَمْرُ، وَقَدْ كَانَ فُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ يَشْرَبُونَهَا وَهُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ، فَمَاتُوا، فَقَدْ كَانُوا يَشْرَبُونَهَا، إِنَّمَا أُنْزِلَ تَحْرِيمُهَا، وَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالأَنْصَابُ وَالأَزْلامُ رِجْسٌ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ } إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: { فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ }، فَقَالَ الْقَوْمُ: فَقَدِ انْتَهَيْنَا يَا رَبَّنَا، فَقَالَ: { لَيْسَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ جُنَاحٌ فِيمَا طَعِمُوا } الْقَوْمُ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَشْرَبُونَهَا، ثُمَّ مَاتُوا مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَنْزِلَ تَحْرِيمُهَا { إِذَا مَا اتَّقَوْا وَآمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ ثُمَّ اتَّقَوْا وَآمَنُوا ثُمَّ اتَّقَوْا وَأَحْسَنُوا وَاللهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ } .
Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to drink alcohol, and their normal lives continued upon this. When the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, some people said: Alcohol has become forbidden for us, but so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so used to drink alcohol and all of them are people of Paradise, even though they died while drinking alcohol. This was at a time when alcohol had not yet been made forbidden. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it." Then He said: "So will you not desist?" So the companions said: O our Lord! We have desisted. Then Allah revealed this verse: "There is not upon those who believe and do righteous deeds [any] blame concerning what they have consumed," meaning there is no sin upon those who, after believing and doing righteous deeds, drank alcohol before its prohibition, then they became pious, believed, did righteous deeds, then again adopted piety, remained firm upon faith, acted with excellence, and Allah loves those who do good.
Hadith 809
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ: اصْطَبَحَ نَاسٌ مِنَ الْخَمْرِ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ، ثُمَّ قُتِلُوا .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: On the day of Uhud, some people went out in the morning after drinking alcohol, and then they were killed in the battle.
Hadith 810
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: نَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَإِثْمُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنْ نَفْعِهِمَا } قَالَ: ذَمَّهَا اللهُ فِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ، وَلَمْ يُحَرِّمْهَا، وَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ حَلَالٌ، ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللهُ فِيهِ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ آيَةً فِي شَأْنِ الْخَمْرِ هِيَ أَشَدُّ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ، فَقَالَ: { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلاةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكَارَى حَتَّى تَعْلَمُوا مَا تَقُولُونَ }، فَكَانَ السُّكْرُ فِيهَا حَرَامًا، ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى الْآيَةَ الَّتِي فِي سُورَةِ الْمَائِدَةِ: { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالأَنْصَابُ وَالأَزْلامُ رِجْسٌ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ } ... إِلَى قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ } قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: فَجَاءَ تَحْرِيمُهَا فِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ، قَلِيلُهَا وَكَثِيرُهَا، مَا أَسْكَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا لَمْ يُسْكِرْ .
Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Allah the Exalted mentioned wine and gambling in the verse: “They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, ‘In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.’” In this verse, He spoke ill of wine and gambling, but did not make them unlawful at that time; at that time, both were lawful. Then after that, Allah the Exalted revealed another verse, which was stricter than the first: “O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated,” meaning, do not go near prayer in a state of intoxication. Through this verse, it was made unlawful to pray while intoxicated. Then this verse from Surah al-Ma’idah was revealed: “Indeed, wine, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it,” up to, “So will you not desist?” Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Through this verse, the prohibition of wine was completed—whether a little or a lot, whether it intoxicates or not, all was declared unlawful.
Hadith 811
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: نَا سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ: بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ: { إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ } قَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَدْ حَرَّمَ الْخَمْرَ، فَمَنْ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ مِنْهَا شَيْءٌ فَلَا يَطْعَمْهُ، وَلَا يَبِعْهُ، فَأَهَرَاقُوهَا، حَتَّى جَعَلَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ يَجِدُونَ رِيحَهَا فِي طَرِيقِ الْمَدِينَةِ .
Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When the verse ﴿إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ﴾ was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has forbidden alcohol. Whoever has any, let him neither drink it nor sell it. So everyone poured out their alcohol, until its smell could be sensed in the streets of Madinah.
Hadith 812
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو حَيَّانَ التَّيْمِيُّ، قَالَ: نَا شَدَّادٌ أَبُو الْفُرَاتِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو دَاوُدَ شَيْخٌ - أَوْ قَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدَائِنِ - قَالَ: كُنْتُ تَحْتَ مِنْبَرِ حُذَيْفَةَ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ بِالْمَدَائِنِ فَقَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُمْ يَبِيعُونَ الْخَمْرَ، وَيَقْتَنُونَ الْخِنْزِيرَ ؟ أَلَا إِنَّ بَائِعَ الْخَمْرِ وَشَارِبَهَا فِي الْإِثْمِ سَوَاءٌ، وَإِنَّ مُقْتَنِيَ الْخِنْزِيرِ وَآكِلَهُ فِي الْإِثْمِ سَوَاءٌ، أَلَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ تَعَاهَدُوا أَرِقَّكُمْ فَانْظُرُوا مَا يَأْتُونَكُمْ بِهِ مِنْ كَسْبِهِمْ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ لَحْمٌ نَبَتَ مِنْ سُحْتٍ .
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O people! What is this matter that some people sell wine and raise pigs? Beware! The one who drinks wine and the one who sells it are equal in sin, and the one who raises pigs and the one who eats them are also equal in sin. Take care regarding your slaves, from where they earn for you, because the flesh that is produced from the unlawful will not enter Paradise.
Hadith 813
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: نَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ: إِنَّمَا سُمِّيَتِ الْخَمْرُ، لِأَنَّهَا تُرِكَتْ حَتَّى صَفَا صَفْوُهَا، وَرَسَبَ كَدَرُهَا .
Saeed bin Al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Wine is called "khamr" because it is left for such a duration that its clear part rises to the top and the impure part settles at the bottom.
Hadith 814
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا مَنْصُورٌ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو: مَنْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ لَمْ يَزَلْ مُشْرِكًا يَوْمَهُ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ، فَإِنْ سَكِرَ مِنْهَا لَمْ تُقْبَلْ لَهُ صَلَاةٌ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا، فَإِنْ مَاتَ فِيهِنَّ مَاتَ كَافِرًا .
It is narrated from Khaythamah bin Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Whoever drinks alcohol remains a polytheist for the rest of his day until evening; if he becomes intoxicated from it, his prayer is not accepted for forty days, and if he dies during those days, he will die as a disbeliever.
Hadith 815
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: لُعِنَتِ الْخَمْرُ، وَشَارِبُهَا، وَسَاقِيهَا، وَبَائِعُهَا، وَمُشْتَرِيهَا، وَعَاصِرُهَا، وَمُعْتَصِرُهَا، وَحَامِلُهَا، وَالْمَحْمُولَةُ إِلَيْهِ، وَآكِلُ ثَمَنِهَا .
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Curse has been pronounced upon alcohol, its drinker, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who squeezes (prepares) it, the one who has it squeezed, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, and the one who consumes its price.
Hadith 816
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا فُلَيْحُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: لَعَنَ اللهُ الْخَمْرَ، وَلَعَنَ شَارِبَهَا وَسَاقِيَهَا، وَعَاصِرَهَا وَمُعْتَصِرَهَا، وَحَامِلَهَا وَالْمَحْمُولَةَ إِلَيْهِ، وَبَائِعَهَا وَمُبْتَاعَهَا، وَآكِلَ ثَمَنِهَا .
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah has cursed alcohol, and the one who drinks it, serves it, squeezes it, has it squeezed, carries it, the one to whom it is carried, sells it, buys it, and the one who consumes its price.
Hadith 817
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا الْعَوَّامُ، عَنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: A habitual drinker of alcohol is like one who worships Lat and Uzza.
Hadith 818
وَأَنَا عُبَيْدَةُ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: مُعَاقِرُ الْخَمْرِ كَمَنْ عَبَدَ اللَّاتَ وَالْعُزَّى .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The one who drinks alcohol is like the one who has worshipped Lat and Uzza.
Hadith 819
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا مُطِيعُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ: نَا الشَّعْبِيُّ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: لَعَنَ اللهُ فُلَانًا، فَإِنَّهُ أَوَّلُ مَنْ أَذِنَ فِي بَيْعِ الْخَمْرِ، وَإِنَّ التِّجَارَةَ لَا تَحِلُّ إِلَّا فِيمَا يَحِلُّ أَكْلُهُ، أَوْ شُرْبُهُ .
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May Allah curse so-and-so, he was the first person who permitted the buying and selling of alcohol, and indeed, trade is only permissible in that which is lawful to eat or drink.
Hadith 820
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا حِبَّانُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَبُو سِنَانٍ ضِرَارُ بْنُ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي الْهُذَيْلِ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ: لَوْ رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا يَشْرَبُ الْخَمْرَ لَا يَرَانِي إِلَّا قَتَلْتُهُ، فَاسْتَطَعْتُ أَنْ أَقْتُلَهُ لَقَتَلْتُهُ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: If I saw someone drinking alcohol and he did not see me, and I had the ability to kill him, I would certainly kill him.
Hadith 821
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا فُلَيْحٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ وَعْلَةَ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّا بِأَرْضٍ لَنَا فِيهَا كُرُومٌ، وَإِنَّ أَكْثَرَ غَلَّتِهَا الْخَمْرُ ؟ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: قَدِمَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ دَوْسٍ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِرَاوِيَةِ خَمْرٍ أَهْدَاهَا لَهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: هَلْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ اللهَ حَرَّمَهَا بَعْدَكَ، فَأَقْبَلَ الدَّوْسِيُّ عَلَى رَجُلٍ كَانَ مَعَهُ، فَأَمَرَهُ بِبَيْعِهَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: هَلْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الَّذِي حَرَّمَ شُرْبَهَا حَرَّمَ بَيْعَهَا، وَأَكْلَ ثَمَنِهَا، فَأَمَرَ بِالْمَزَادَةِ فَأُهْرِيقَتْ حَتَّى لَمْ يَبْقَ فِيهَا قَطْرَةٌ .
Abdur Rahman bin Wa'lah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that we live in a land where we have vineyards, and most of their produce comes out in the form of wine. So Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas said: A man from the tribe of Daws brought a waterskin filled with wine as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Do you know that Allah has made it forbidden for you after you? So that man turned to his companion and ordered him to sell it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you know that the one who made its drinking forbidden has also made its buying, selling, and consuming its price forbidden? So he ordered the waterskin to be poured out on the ground until not a single drop remained in it.
Hadith 822
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو النَّضِرِ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَهْدَى إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَاوِيَةَ خَمْرٍ، وَكَانَ يُهْدِيهَا إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ حَرَّمَهَا بَعْدَكَ، فَقَالَ: أَفَلَا أَبِيعُهَا ؟ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ الَّذِي حَرَّمَ عَلَيْنَا شُرْبَهَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْنَا بَيْعَهَا، فَقَالَ: أَفَلَا أُكَارِمُ بِهَا الْيَهُودَ، فَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ: أَنَّ الَّذِي حَرَّمَ شُرْبَهَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنْ يُكَارِمُوا الْيَهُودَ بِهَا، قَالَ: مَا أَصْنَعُ ؟ قَالَ: صُبَّهَا فِي الْبَطْحَاءِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man presented a skin of wine to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which he used to give to him as a gift. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah has made it forbidden for you. The man said: Then can I not sell it? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The One who made its drinking forbidden for us has also made its selling forbidden for us. He said: Should I not give it to the Jews to honor them? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one who forbids its drinking also forbids honoring the Jews with it. Then the man said: What should I do now? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Pour it out in the valley of Makkah.
Hadith 823
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: نَا عَمْرٌو، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ جَعْدَةَ، سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: قَالَ عُثْمَانُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ: إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْخَمْرَ، فَإِنَّهَا مِفْتَاحٌ لِكُلِّ شَرٍّ، وَإِنَّ رَجُلًا مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ، قِيلَ: إِمَّا أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِهَذَا الصَّلِيبِ، وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَحْرِقَ هَذَا الْكِتَابَ، وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَقْتُلَ هَذَا الصَّبِيَّ، وَإِمَّا أَنْ تُصِيبَ هَذِهِ الْمَرْأَةَ، وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَشْرَبَ هَذِهِ الْكَأْسَ - الْخَمْرَ - فَرَأَى أَنَّهَا أَهْوَنُ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا شَرِبَهَا فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ، سَجَدَ لِلصَّلِيبِ، وَحَرَقَ الْكِتَابَ، وَقَتَلَ الصَّبِيَّ، وَأَصَابَ مِنَ الْمَرْأَةِ .
Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said from the pulpit: Beware of wine, for it is the key to every evil. And among you, there was a man from those before you, to whom it was said: Either prostrate to this cross, or burn this book, or kill this child, or commit adultery with this woman, or drink wine from this cup. So he considered drinking wine to be the lightest of these, and when he drank the wine, he did all of them: he prostrated to the cross, burned the book, killed the child, and committed adultery with the woman.
Hadith 824
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: أَكْبَرُ الْكَبَائِرِ شُرْبُ الْخَمْرِ .
It is narrated from Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The greatest major sin is drinking alcohol.
Hadith 825
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ شُبَيْلِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، قَالَ: بَلَغَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ كَانَ يَكُونُ بِالسَّوَادِ يَتَّجِرُ فِي الْخَمْرِ، فَأَثْرَى وَكَثُرَ مَالُهُ، فَكَتَبَ فِيهِ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، أَنِ اكْسِرُوا كُلَّ مَالٍ وَجَدْتُمُوهُ لَهُ، وَسَيِّبُوا كُلَّ مَاشِيَةٍ هِيَ لَهُ .
Abu Amr Shaibani (may Allah have mercy on him) says: News reached Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) about a man who was trading in alcohol in the region of Sawad, through which he became wealthy and his wealth increased greatly. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote an order regarding him that whatever wealth of his is found, destroy it, and whatever livestock he has, set them free.
Hadith 826
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، قَالَ: كُلُّ شَيْءٍ فِيهِ قِمَارٌ فَهُوَ مِنَ الْمَيْسِرِ، حَتَّى لَعِبِ الصِّبْيَانِ بِالْجَوْزِ وَالْكِعَابِ .
Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Every thing in which there is gambling is maisir, that is, included in gambling, even children playing with walnuts and with dice.
Hadith 827
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ: أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ قِمَارَ الصِّبْيَانِ .
Ibrahim Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) used to dislike children's gambling.
