Abu Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) says: “O you who believe! Do not forbid the good things which Allah has made lawful for you” (__QUR_N__)—this verse was revealed about Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz’oon (may Allah be pleased with him) and some of his companions. They had made many lawful things and women unlawful for themselves, to the extent that some of them intended to cut off their private parts. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: “O you who believe! Do not forbid the good things which Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like the transgressors.” (__QUR_N__) That is, do not make lawful things unlawful, and do not transgress, for indeed Allah does not like those who transgress.

Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Meat was brought to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), so he began to eat from it and said to the people: Come near. The people came near, but one of them held back. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: What happened to you? He said: I have made milk unlawful for myself. He said: This is from the footsteps of Satan. Come near and eat, and offer expiation for your oath. Then he recited this verse: “O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful for you” up to “the transgressors.” __QUR_N__ __XREF_N__ __REF_N__
