قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {لَوْلا يَنْهَاهُمُ الرَّبَّانِيُّونَ وَالأَحْبَارُ عَنْ قَوْلِهِمُ الإِثْمَ وَأَكْلِهِمُ السُّحْتَ لَبِئْسَ مَا كَانُوا يَصْنَعُونَ} .

His (Allah's) saying: {Why do the rabbis and religious scholars not forbid them from saying what is sinful and devouring what is unlawful? How wretched is what they have been doing}

Hadith 767
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { لَوْلا يَنْهَاهُمُ الرَّبَّانِيُّونَ وَالأَحْبَارُ عَنْ قَوْلِهِمُ الإِثْمَ } قَالَ: الرَّبَّانِيُّونَ: هُمُ الْفُقَهَاءُ الْعُلَمَاءُ، وَهُمْ فَوْقَ الْأَحْبَارِ .
Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the explanation of Allah the Exalted’s statement: ﴿Why do not the rabbis and the scholars forbid them from their sinful speech﴾: Rabbaniyun are the jurists and learned people, and they are of a higher rank than the ahbar.
