Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There are two such verses in the Qur’an that if a servant commits a sin, then recites these verses and seeks forgiveness from Allah, Allah forgives him. The people asked him which verses they were, but he did not tell them. So Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) and Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him), one said to the other: Let us search for them ourselves. So both of them went home, picked up the Mushaf, and looked in Surah Al-Baqarah but did not find them there. Then, searching in Surah An-Nisa, they reached this verse: __QUR_N__ “And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” __QUR_N__ So they said: This is one verse. Then they continued looking in Surah Aal-e-Imran until they reached this verse: __QUR_N__ “And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins—and who can forgive sins except Allah?—and do not persist in what they have done while they know.” __QUR_N__ So they said: This is the second. Then they closed the Mushaf and went to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: Are these the two verses? He replied: Yes.
