قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا نَصِيبًا مِنَ الْكِتَابِ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْجِبْتِ وَالطَّاغُوتِ وَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا هَؤُلاءِ أَهْدَى مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا سَبِيلا * أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ لَعَنَهُمُ اللهُ وَمَنْ يَلْعَنِ اللهُ فَلَنْ تَجِدَ لَهُ نَصِيرًا} .
His (Allah's) saying: {Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture, believing in superstition and false objects and saying to the disbelievers: These are better guided than the believers as to the way? Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed; and he whom Allah curses—never will you find for him any helper}

Hadith 648
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ قَالَ: قَدِمَ حُيَيُّ بْنُ أَخْطَبَ، وَكَعْبُ بْنُ الْأَشْرَفِ إِلَى مَكَّةَ، فَقَالَتْ قُرَيْشٌ: أَنْتُمْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ وَأَهْلُ الْعِلْمِ، فَنَحْنُ خَيْرٌ أَمْ مُحَمَّدٌ ؟ فَقَالُوا: وَمَا أَنْتُمْ، وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ ؟ قَالُوا: صُنْبُورٌ قَطَّعَ أَرْحَامَنَا، وَاتَّبَعَهُ سُرَّاقُ الْحَجِيجِ بَنُو غِفَارٍ، فَنَحْنُ أَهْدَى سَبِيلًا أَمْ هُوَ ؟ قَالُوا: أَنْتُمْ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا نَصِيبًا مِنَ الْكِتَابِ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْجِبْتِ وَالطَّاغُوتِ وَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا هَؤُلاءِ أَهْدَى مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا سَبِيلا * أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ لَعَنَهُمُ اللهُ وَمَنْ يَلْعَنِ اللهُ فَلَنْ تَجِدَ لَهُ نَصِيرًا } .
Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Huyayy bin Akhtab and Ka'b bin Ashraf came to Makkah, so the Quraysh said to them: "You are people of the Book and people of knowledge, tell us, are we better or Muhammad (peace be upon him)?" They said: "What are you compared to Muhammad?" The Quraysh said: "He is the one who severs our ties of kinship, and his followers are the people of Banu Ghifar, who are highway robbers during Hajj. So tell us, are we more rightly guided or is he?" They said: "You are." So Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: "Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book? They believe in superstition and false gods and say about the disbelievers, 'These are better guided than the believers as to the way.' Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed, and whoever Allah curses, you will never find for him any helper."
Hadith 649
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ حَسَّانَ الْعَبْسِيِّ، قَالَ: قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: الْجِبْتُ: السِّحْرُ، وَالطَّاغُوتُ: الشَّيْطَانُ، وَإِنَّ الشَّجَاعَةَ وَالْجُبْنَ غَرَائِزُ تَكُونُ فِي الرِّجَالِ، يُقَاتِلُ الشُّجَاعُ عَمَّنْ لَا يَعْرِفُ، وَيَفِرُّ الْجَبَانُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، وَإِنَّ كَرَمَ الرَّجُلِ: دِينُهُ، وَحَسَبُهُ: خُلُقُهُ، وَإِنْ كَانَ فَارِسِيًّا أَوْ نَبَطِيًّا .
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Al-Jibt refers to magic and Al-Taghut refers to Satan, and indeed, bravery and cowardice are innate qualities of men. A brave person fights even for someone he does not know, and a coward flees even from his own father. And a man's true greatness is his religion, and his honor is his character, whether he is Persian or Nabatean.
