قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {إِنَّمَا التَّوْبَةُ عَلَى اللهِ لِلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ السُّوءَ بِجَهَالَةٍ ثُمَّ يَتُوبُونَ مِنْ قَرِيبٍ فَأُولَئِكَ يَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَكَانَ اللهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا * وَلَيْسَتِ التَّوْبَةُ لِلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ السَّيِّئَاتِ حَتَّى إِذَا حَضَرَ أَحَدَهُمُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ إِنِّي تُبْتُ الآنَ وَلا الَّذِينَ يَمُوتُونَ وَهُمْ كُفَّارٌ أُولَئِكَ أَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا}
His (Allah's) saying: {Repentance is not for those who continue to do evil deeds until, when death approaches one of them, he says: Indeed, I repent now; nor for those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment}

Hadith 596
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا، عَنْ شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الضَّحَّاكَ بْنَ مُزَاحِمٍ يَقُولُ فِي قَوْلِهِ: { يَتُوبُونَ مِنْ قَرِيبٍ } قَالَ: كُلُّ تَوْبَةٍ قَبْلَ الْمَوْتِ فَهُوَ مِنْ قَرِيبٍ .
Dhahhak bin Muzahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Every repentance that is made before death is considered to be 'near'."
Hadith 597
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْبَيْلَمَانِيِّ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، مَا مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ يَتُوبُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَمُوتَ بِيَوْمٍ، إِلَّا قَبِلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ تَوْبَتَهُ، قَالَ: فَأَخْبَرْتُ بِذَلِكَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ ؟ فَقُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَأَشْهَدُ لَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: مَا مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ يَتُوبُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَمُوتَ بِنِصْفِ يَوْمٍ، إِلَّا قَبِلَ اللهُ تَوْبَتَهُ، قَالَ: فَأَخْبَرْتُ بِذَلِكَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ ذَاكَ مِنْهُ ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَأَشْهَدُ لَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: مَا مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ يَتُوبُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَمُوتَ بِضَحْوَةٍ إِلَّا قَبِلَ اللهُ تَوْبَتَهُ، فَأَخْبَرْتُ بِذَلِكَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ ؟ فَقُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، فَقَالَ: أَشْهَدُ لَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، يَقُولُ: مَا مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ يَتُوبُ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُغَرْغِرَ نَفْسُهُ فِي شِدْقِهِ، إِلَّا قَبِلَ اللهُ تَوْبَتَهُ .
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul! If any person repents one day before his death, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, accepts his repentance." The narrator says: I told this to a Companion, so he asked: "Did you hear this yourself from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I said: "Yes!" So he said: "I bear witness that I also heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever repents half a day before his death, Allah accepts his repentance.'" The narrator says: I told this to another Companion, so he asked: "Did you hear this yourself from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I said: "Yes!" So he said: "I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever repents at the time of Duha (forenoon) before his death, Allah accepts his repentance.'" The narrator says: I told this to another Companion, so he asked: "Did you hear this yourself from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I said: "Yes!" So he said: "I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'As long as a person's soul has not reached his throat in the final breaths, if he repents, Allah accepts his repentance.'"
