تَفْسِيرُ سُورَةِ النِّسَاءِ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلا تُقْسِطُوا فِي الْيَتَامَى فَانْكِحُوا مَا طَابَ لَكُمْ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ مَثْنَى وَثُلاثَ وَرُبَاعَ فَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلا تَعْدِلُوا فَوَاحِدَةً أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى أَلا تَعُولُوا}
Interpretation of Surah An-Nisa, His (Allah's) saying: {And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphans, then marry those that please you of women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hands possess. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice]}

Hadith 554
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: بَعَثَ اللهُ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالنَّاسُ عَلَى أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ إِلَّا أَنْ يُؤْمَرُوا بِشَيْءٍ، وَيُنْهَوْا عَنْهُ فَكَانُوا يَسْأَلُونَ عَنِ الْيَتَامَى، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لِلنِّسَاءِ عَدَدٌ وَلَا ذِكْرٌ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلا تُقْسِطُوا فِي الْيَتَامَى فَانْكِحُوا مَا طَابَ لَكُمْ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ مَثْنَى وَثُلاثَ وَرُبَاعَ } وَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ يَتَزَوَّجُ مَا شَاءَ، فَقَالَ: كَمَا تَخَافُونَ أَلَّا تُقْسِطُوا فِي الْيَتَامَى، فَخَافُوا فِي النِّسَاءِ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا فِيهِنَّ .
Saeed bin Jubair, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when the people were upon the ways of ignorance, except that they were commanded or forbidden regarding something. They used to ask about orphans, and there was neither any number nor mention for women. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: “And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphans, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four,” and men were permitted to marry as many women as they wished. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: Just as you fear injustice regarding orphans, so too fear injustice regarding women.
Hadith 555
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا مُغِيرَةُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ - فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى أَلا تَعُولُوا } - قَالَ: لَا تَمِيلُوا .
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The meaning of Allah the Exalted’s statement ﴿ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَلَّا تَعُولُوا﴾ is: «لَا تَمِيلُوا» that is, you do not incline away from justice.
Hadith 556
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا حُصَيْنٌ، عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ، - فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى أَلا تَعُولُوا } - قَالَ: لَا تَجُورُوا .
It is narrated from Abu Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) that the statement of Allah, the Exalted, ﴿ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَلَّا تَعُولُوا﴾ means: «لَا تَجُورُوا» that is, you do not commit injustice.
Hadith 557
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا دَاوُدُ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ - فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى أَلا تَعُولُوا } - أَيْ لَا تَمِيلُوا، ثُمَّ أَنْشَدَنِي بَيْتًا قَالَهُ أَبُو طَالِبٍ: بِمِيزَانِ قِسْطٍ وَزْنُهُ غَيْرُ عَائِلِ .
Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The meaning of Allah Almighty’s statement ﴿ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَلَّا تَعُولُوا﴾ is: «لَا تَمِيلُوا». Then Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) recited to me a verse of poetry that Abu Talib had said: «بِمِيزَانِ قِسْطٍ وَزْنُهُ غَيْرُ عَائِلِ» meaning, in the scale of justice, its weight is never diminished.
Hadith 558
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ بَيَانٍ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ الشَّعْبِيِّ - فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى أَلا تَعُولُوا } - قَالَ: أَنْ لَا تَمِيلُوا، أُرَاهُ قَالَ: عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ .
‘Amir al-Sha‘bi, may Allah have mercy on him, regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: ﴿ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَلَّا تَعُولُوا﴾ said: That is, you do not incline. I think he said: This is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both.
