قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {وَلا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ * فَرِحِينَ بِمَا آتَاهُمُ اللهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ وَيَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِالَّذِينَ لَمْ يَلْحَقُوا بِهِمْ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ أَلا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ}
His saying, Exalted is He: {And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision, * Rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined them—that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.}

Hadith 538
َّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى قَالَ: نَزَلَتْ فِي قَتْلَى أُحُدٍ: { وَلا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ } وَنَزَلَ فِيهِمْ: { وَيَتَّخِذَ مِنْكُمْ شُهَدَاءَ } وَقُتِلَ مِنْهُمْ سَبْعُونَ رَجُلًا، أَرْبَعَةٌ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ: حَمْزَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ، وَمُصْعَبُ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الدَّارِ، وَالشَّمَّاسُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ مِنْ بَنِي مَخْزُومٍ، وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَحْشٍ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدِ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ، وَسَائِرُهُمْ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ .
Abu Dhuha, may Allah have mercy on him, said: This verse ﴿And do not think of those who are killed in the way of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision﴾ was revealed about the martyrs of Uhud. And this was also revealed: ﴿And that He may take martyrs from among you﴾. Seventy of them were martyred, of whom four were Muhajirun: Sayyiduna Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with him, who was from Banu Hashim; Sayyiduna Mus'ab bin Umair, may Allah be pleased with him, who was from Banu Abd al-Dar; Sayyiduna Shams bin Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, who was from Banu Makhzum; and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jahsh, may Allah be pleased with him, who was from Banu Asad bin Khuzaymah; and all the rest were Ansar.
Hadith 539
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ عَبْدُ اللهِ، عَنْ قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { وَلا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ } فَقَالَ: أَمَا إِنَّا قَدْ سَأَلْنَا عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: أَرْوَاحُهُمْ كَطَيْرٍ خُضْرٍ تَسْرَحُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ فِي أَيِّهَا شَاءَتْ، ثُمَّ تَأْوِي إِلَى قَنَادِيلَ مُعَلَّقَةٍ بِالْعَرْشِ، فَبَيْنَا هُمْ كَذَلِكَ، إِذْ طَلَعَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ اطِّلَاعَةً، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: سَلُونِي مَا شِئْتُمْ، قَالُوا: يَا رَبَّنَا، مَاذَا نَسْأَلُكَ وَنَحْنُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ نَسْرَحُ فِي أَيِّهَا شِئْنَا ؟ فَبَيْنَا هُمْ كَذَلِكَ، إِذْ طَلَعَ رَبُّكَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ اطِّلَاعَةً، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: سَلُونِي مَا شِئْتُمْ، قَالُوا: يَا رَبَّنَا، وَمَاذَا نَسْأَلُكَ، وَنَحْنُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ نَسْرَحُ فِي أَيِّهَا شِئْنَا ؟ فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا أَنَّهُمْ لَنْ يُتْرَكُوا إِلَّا أَنْ يَسْأَلُوا، قَالُوا: نَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَرُدَّ أَرْوَاحَنَا فِي أَجْسَادِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَتَّى نُقْتَلَ فِي سَبِيلِكَ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى أَنَّهُمْ لَا يَسْأَلُونَ إِلَّا هَذَا تُرِكُوا .
Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the statement of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: “And do not think of those who are killed in the way of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.” He said: We had asked about this, and he said: Their souls are like green birds that roam freely in Paradise wherever they wish, then they take refuge in lanterns hanging near the Throne. In this state, when their Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, looked upon them, He said: “Ask Me for whatever you wish.” They said: “O our Lord! What should we ask from You, when we roam in Paradise wherever we wish?” When He saw that they would not ask for anything, He said: “We ask You to return our souls to our bodies in the world, so that we may be martyred again in Your path.” When Allah saw that they would not ask for anything except this, He left them as they were.
Hadith 540
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ السُّلَمِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: اعْلَمْ أَنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَحْيَا أَبَاكَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: تَمَنَّ، فَتَمَنَّى أَنْ يَرْجِعَ إِلَى الدُّنْيَا، فَيُقْتَلَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي قَضَيْتُ أَنْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ .
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Know that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has brought your father back to life," then he said: "Ask if you wish." So my father expressed the desire to return to the world and be martyred again. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have decided that they will not return."
