His saying, Exalted is He: {Whether you reveal what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it.} To His saying: {So help us against the disbelieving people.}

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding the verse: "And whether you disclose what is in yourselves or conceal it" (__QUR_N__): This verse was hard on the companions. They said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We find in our hearts some things whose disclosure we do not like, so will we be held accountable for them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you really face this issue? That is pure faith. Then Allah the Exalted revealed the verses: "The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord" (__QUR_N__).

Gabriel (peace be upon him) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Indeed, Allah has spoken good words to you and your ummah when this verse was revealed: "The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah..." So ask, and you will be given. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: «لَايُكَلِّفُاللَّهُنَفْسًاإِلَّاوُسْعَهَا» until the surah was completed with the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

‘Amir Sha‘bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When this verse was revealed: ﴿And whether you disclose what is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it﴾, there was severity in it. Then the following verse was revealed, which abrogated it: ﴿It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned﴾.

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said about this verse: ﴿And whether you disclose what is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills.﴾: It refers to the person who intends to commit a sin but does not carry it out, so as much grief and sorrow is sent upon him as the intention he had for the sin, and this is his reckoning.

Dhahhak bin Muzahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Jibreel (peace be upon him) brought these verses, and with him were as many angels as Allah willed: from ﴿آمَنَالرَّسُولُبِمَاأُنْزِلَإِلَيْهِمِنْرَبِّهِ﴾ to ﴿رَبَّنَالَاتُؤَاخِذْنَاإِنْنَسِينَا﴾, so He said: This is for you; ﴿أَوْأَخْطَأْنَا﴾ so He said: This is for you; ﴿رَبَّنَاوَلَاتَحْمِلْعَلَيْنَاإِصْرًاكَمَاحَمَلْتَهُعَلَىالَّذِينَمِنْقَبْلِنَا﴾ so He said: This is for you; ﴿وَلَاتُحَمِّلْنَامَالَاطَاقَةَلَنَابِهِ﴾ so He said: This is for you; ﴿وَاعْفُعَنَّا﴾ so He said: This is for you; ﴿وَاغْفِرْلَنَا﴾ so He said: This is for you; ﴿وَارْحَمْنَا﴾ so He said: This is for you; ﴿أَنْتَمَوْلَانَافَانْصُرْنَاعَلَىالْقَوْمِالْكَافِرِينَ﴾ so He said: This is for you.

Mughira bin Abdul Malik Qureshi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It used to be said that learn Surah Al-Baqarah, for adhering to it is goodness and abandoning it is regret, and magicians cannot overcome it. Learn the two radiant ones: Surah Al-Baqarah and Aal-e-Imran.

Hadith Gradingمحدثین:سنده صحيح إلى المغيرة، لكنه هو مجهول، ومع ذلك لم يذكر من الذي قال هذا الذي ذكره. فإن كان يقصد النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فبينه وبينه مفازة؛ لأنه لم يُذكر حتى في التابعين.
Waqa bin Iyas Asadi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: One night Sa'id bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) heard me reciting Surah Al-Baqarah, Al-Imran, and An-Nisa, so he said: Did I not hear you reciting Surah Al-Baqarah, An-Nisa, and Al-Imran last night? I said: Yes. So he said: Do not do so; you should recite the Al-Haam and the Mufassal surahs, because Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever recites Surah Al-Baqarah, An-Nisa, and Al-Imran will be counted among the people of wisdom with Allah.
