قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {وَالَّذِينَ يُتَوَفَّوْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَيَذَرُونَ أَزْوَاجًا وَصِيَّةً لأَزْوَاجِهِمْ مَتَاعًا إِلَى الْحَوْلِ غَيْرَ إِخْرَاجٍ}
His saying, Exalted is He: {And those who are taken in death among you and leave wives behind—they, [the wives], shall wait four months and ten [days].}

Hadith 415
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا جُوَيْبِرٌ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ - فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { وَالَّذِينَ يُتَوَفَّوْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَيَذَرُونَ أَزْوَاجًا وَصِيَّةً لأَزْوَاجِهِمْ مَتَاعًا إِلَى الْحَوْلِ غَيْرَ إِخْرَاجٍ } - قَالَ: كَانَ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا مَاتَ أَنْفَقَ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ حَوْلًا، ثُمَّ يُقَسِّمُ أَهْلُ الْمِيرَاثِ مِيرَاثَهُمْ، فَنَزَلَتْ: { وَالَّذِينَ يُتَوَفَّوْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَيَذَرُونَ أَزْوَاجًا يَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِأَنْفُسِهِنَّ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا } ثُمَّ نُسِخَ مِنَ الْأَرْبَعَةِ الْأَشْهُرِ وَالْعَشَرِ: { وَأُولاتُ الأَحْمَالِ أَجَلُهُنَّ أَنْ يَضَعْنَ حَمْلَهُنَّ } ; إِذَا وَضَعْنَ فِيمَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ .
Dhahhak (may Allah have mercy on him) says that previously, when a person passed away, his wife would be provided for during a whole year, then the heirs would distribute the inheritance. Then this verse was revealed: ﴿And those of you who die and leave wives behind, a bequest to their wives of maintenance for a year without being turned out﴾, then this ruling was abrogated and this verse was revealed: ﴿And those of you who die and leave wives behind, they shall wait by themselves for four months and ten days﴾, then regarding this ruling of four months and ten days, this verse was revealed: ﴿And for those who are pregnant, their term is until they deliver their burden﴾, meaning if they give birth before that, their waiting period is completed.
Hadith 416
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا يُونُسُ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّهُ قَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ: { وَالَّذِينَ يُتَوَفَّوْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَيَذَرُونَ أَزْوَاجًا وَصِيَّةً لأَزْوَاجِهِمْ مَتَاعًا إِلَى الْحَوْلِ }، قَالَ: قَدْ نُسِخَ هَذَا .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) recited this verse: "And those of you who die and leave wives behind, a bequest to their wives of maintenance for a year" (__QUR_N__), then said: This ruling has been abrogated.
