His saying, Exalted is He: {And if you fear [an enemy], then [pray] on foot or riding. But when you are secure, remember Allah as He has taught you that which you did not [previously] know.}

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding the verse: "But if you fear (danger), then (pray) on foot or riding," this is in the state of fighting, that a person should pray wherever he is, in whatever direction he is facing, and even on his mount, in whatever direction he is, he should pray in that direction, and for bowing and prostration, he should gesture with his head.

Mughira (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) about the verse: ﴿FARIJĀLAN AW RUKBĀNAN﴾, so he said: This is when the enemy is pursuing, so a person should pray in whichever direction he is facing, whether mounted or on foot, performing two rak‘ahs, and indicating bowing and prostration with gestures, making the prostration lower than the bowing.

Dhahhak (may Allah have mercy on him) says that if it is a state of war, or the enemy is pursuing him, or a wild animal is chasing him, then wherever he is facing, he should perform one rak‘ah at a time and perform bowing and prostration by gesture, and if even this is not possible, then he should say one or two takbirs.

Shu'ayb bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I heard 'Abdulwahhab bin Bakht al-Makki (may Allah have mercy on him) say: When the battle is intense, if possible, perform the prayer standing; otherwise, while riding; and if that is not possible, then say the takbir; and if even that is not possible, then at the very least, keep mentioning the prayer in your heart.

Al-Awza'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sabiq Barbarī (may Allah have mercy on him) informed me that Makḥūl (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote a letter to us in Dābiq addressed to Hasan Basri (may Allah have mercy on him), in which he asked about those people who are in pursuit of the enemy. The reply came: If they are not in pursuit, they should pray on the ground, and if they are in pursuit, they should pray on their mounts.
