قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلهِ قَانِتِينَ}
His saying, Exalted is He: {Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient.}

Hadith 392
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ: مَلَأَ اللهُ قُبُورَهُمْ وَقُلُوبَهُمْ نَارًا كَمَا شَغَلُونَا عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى، وَهِيَ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of the Battle of the Trench: "May Allah fill their graves and hearts with fire, just as they kept us occupied from the middle prayer, and that is the Asr prayer."
Hadith 393
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ صُبَيْحٍ، عَنْ شُتَيْرِ بْنِ شَكَلٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ الْأَحْزَابِ: شَغَلُونَا عَنْ صَلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ مَلَأَ اللهُ بُيُوتَهُمْ وَقُبُورَهُمْ نَارًا، ثُمَّ صَلَّاهَا بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of the Battle of Ahzab: "They kept us occupied from Salat al-Wusta, that is, Salat al-Asr. May Allah fill their houses and graves with fire." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed that prayer between Maghrib and Isha.
Hadith 394
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَيَّانَ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ صَلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ شَيْئًا، وَأُقِيمَتْ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ، قَالَ: أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى ؟ قَالَ: أَنَا هَذَا، قَالَ: هِيَ هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked him about the middle prayer (Salat al-Wusta), but he did not give any answer. Then the iqamah for the Asr prayer was called, and when he finished the prayer, he said: "Where is the person who asked about the middle prayer?" He replied: "I am here." So he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This is that prayer."
Hadith 395
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: الصَّلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى: صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The middle prayer is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 396
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ لَبِيبَةَ الطَّائِفِيِّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ: الصَّلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى ؟ قَالَ: أَلَا هِيَ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ .
Abdur Rahman bin Labeebah At-Ta’ifi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): Which is the Salat al-Wusta (the middle prayer)? He replied: Beware! It is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 397
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: صَلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى: صَلَاةُ الصُّبْحِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The middle prayer is the Fajr prayer.
Hadith 398
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ: هِيَ صَلَاةُ الصُّبْحِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: It is the Fajr prayer.
Hadith 399
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ ابْنِ طَاوُسٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: هِيَ صَلَاةُ الصُّبْحِ .
Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is the Salat al-Fajr.
Hadith 400
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ شَدَّادٍ قَالَ: هِيَ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ .
Abdullah bin Shaddad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 401
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَتَّابُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، عَنْ خُصَيْفٍ، عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ: أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَمَرَتْ بِمُصْحَفٍ لَهَا أَنْ يُكْتَبَ، وَقَالَتْ: إِذَا بَلَغْتُمْ: { حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ } فَلَا تَكْتُبُوهَا حَتَّى تُؤْذِنُونِي . فَلَمَّا أَخْبَرُوهَا أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ بَلَغُوا، قَالَتِ: اكْتُبُوهَا صَلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ .
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) ordered her Mushaf to be written, and said: When you reach the verse ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ﴾, inform me. When they informed her that they had reached this verse, she said: Write it as follows: "Salat al-wusta is Salat al-Asr," meaning the middle prayer is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 402
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَتَّابٌ، عَنْ خُصَيْفٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: هِيَ صَلَاةُ الصُّبْحِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: By the middle prayer is meant the Fajr prayer.
Hadith 403
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، أُرَاهُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مَنْ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، يَقُولُ: { حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى } قَالَ: هِيَ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The meaning of ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى﴾ is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 404
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ، عَنْ عَبَايَةَ بْنِ رِفَاعَةَ - فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { وَقُومُوا لِلهِ قَانِتِينَ } - أَيْ مُطِيعِينَ .
Abayah bin Rifa’ah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The meaning of ‘And stand before Allah devoutly obedient’ (__QUR_N__) is to stand as obedient servants to Allah.”
Hadith 405
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ... وَخَفْضُ الْأَيْدِي، وَغَضُّ الْبَصَرِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ .
Hammad bin Zaid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In prayer, the hands should be kept lowered and the gaze should be lowered.
Hadith 406
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو شِهَابٍ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ: مِنَ الْقُنُوتِ: الرُّكُوعُ، وَالْخُشُوعُ، وَغَضُّ الْبَصَرِ، وَخَفْضُ الْجَنَاحِ مِنْ رَهْبَةِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، كَانَ الْعُلَمَاءُ إِذَا قَامَ أَحَدُهُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ، يَهَابُ الرَّحْمَنَ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى أَنْ يَمْتَدَّ بَصَرُهُ، أَوْ يَعْبَثَ بِشَيْءٍ، أَوْ يَلْتَفِتَ، أَوْ يَقْلِبَ الْحَصَا، أَوْ يُحَدِّثَ نَفْسَهُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ شَأْنِ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا نَسْيًا .
Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In Qunoot are included bowing, humility, lowering the gaze, and humbleness out of fear of Allah the Exalted. When the scholars would stand in prayer, they would not raise their gaze due to the awe of the Most Merciful, Glorified and Exalted, nor would they play with anything, nor look here and there, nor turn over pebbles, nor think about worldly matters in their hearts, except what might happen by mistake.
Hadith 407
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو مَعْشَرٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ قَالَ: قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ، وَالنَّاسُ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فِي حَوَائِجِهِمْ كَمَا يَتَكَلَّمُ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فِي حَوَائِجِهِمْ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: { وَقُومُوا لِلهِ قَانِتِينَ } .
When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, people used to talk about their needs during the prayer, just as the People of the Book would talk about their needs during their prayer, until this verse was revealed: "And stand before Allah with devotion."
Hadith 408
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ شُبَيْلٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ قَالَ: كُنَّا نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ، يُكَلِّمُ أَحَدُنَا مَنْ إِلَى جَانِبِهِ، فَنَزَلَتْ: { وَقُومُوا لِلهِ قَانِتِينَ } وَأُمِرْنَا بِالسُّكُوتِ، وَنُهِينَا عَنِ الْكَلَامِ .
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We used to talk during prayer; one of us would speak to the person sitting next to him. Then this verse was revealed: ﴿وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ﴾ (And stand before Allah with devotion), so we were commanded to remain silent and forbidden from speaking.
