Sunan Sa'id

قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنْفِقُونَ قُلِ الْعَفْوَ}
His saying, Exalted is He: {And they ask you what they should spend. Say, "The excess [beyond needs]."}

Hadith 364
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، - فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنْفِقُونَ قُلِ الْعَفْوَ } - قَالَ: الْفَضْلُ .
Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding Allah the Exalted’s statement: ﴿And they ask you what they should spend. Say: ‘The excess’﴾: “By ‘the excess’ is meant surplus wealth.”
Hadith 365
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ مِقْسَمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: الْفَضْلُ عَنِ الْعِيَالِ .
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Fadl refers to the wealth that remains after fulfilling the needs of one's dependents."
