Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When this verse was revealed: “And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread” (__QUR_N__), I took two threads, one white and one black, and placed them under my pillow. I stayed awake the whole night but could not distinguish between the white and black threads. In the morning, I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned my difficulty. He laughed and said: “Your pillow is very wide; this refers to the whiteness of the dawn and the darkness of the night.”
