His saying, Exalted is He: {Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs Umrah—there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good—then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.}

Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said that there was an idol on the Safa hill which was called Isaf, and there was an idol on the Marwah hill which was called Na'ilah. So when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, the people said: O Messenger of Allah! The people of ignorance used to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwah for these two idols, and these two are not among the signs of Allah. Then this verse was revealed: __QUR_N__ "Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj of the House or Umrah, there is no blame upon him for walking between them." __QUR_N__

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding the statement of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" (__QUR_N__), that the Ansar said that walking between these two stones is among the practices of ignorance, so this verse was revealed: "Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" (__QUR_N__).
