Sunan Sa'id

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Whoever wants to acquire knowledge should turn to the Qur'an, for in it are the reports of those before and after."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "A person will not be harmed by not being asked about anything concerning himself, except the Qur'an. If he loves the Qur'an, then surely he loves Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Whoever loves the Qur'an, let him receive glad tidings."

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Learn the Qur'an, for every letter of it you receive ten good deeds. I do not say that 'Alif Lam Meem' is one letter, rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Meem is a letter."

Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever recites the Qur'an has attained such wealth that there is no poverty after it, and trustworthiness is also wealth."

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: "Learn the Qur'an and recite it; for every letter you recite, you will receive ten good deeds. Behold! I do not say that 'Alif Lam Meem' is one letter, rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Meem is a letter."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, this Qur'an is Allah's invitation, so whoever among you is able to learn something from it, let him surely learn; for it is the rope of Allah, the clear light, the beneficial cure. Whoever holds fast to it will be protected, and whoever follows it will be saved. It is not crooked that it should be straightened, nor does it go astray that it should be warned. Its wonders never cease, and it does not become old from repeated recitation. Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, grants you ten good deeds for every letter recited from it. Behold! I do not say that ﴿Alif Lam Meem﴾ is one letter."

Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, this Qur'an can become a reward for you, it can become an admonition for you, and it can also become a burden (of sin) upon you. So follow the Qur'an, do not let it follow you; for whoever follows the Qur'an, it will lead him to the gardens of Paradise, and whoever is forced by the Qur'an to follow it, it will strike his back until it throws him into Hell."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever recites a verse from the Book of Allah, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection, and whoever listens to a verse from the Book of Allah, Allah will write double the reward for him."

Dhahhak bin Qais (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "O people! Teach the Qur'an to your children and family, for whoever Allah Almighty has written Paradise for, it will be said to him: Recite and ascend the ranks of Paradise! Until he reaches the limit of his knowledge of the Qur'an."

Ibrahim Taimi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: It will be said to the companion of the Qur'an: "Recite, ascend, and recite with measured recitation! Thus, he will reach as far as the Qur'an takes him."

Musayyib bin Rafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says: On the Day of Resurrection, the Qur’an will come as an intercessor and a confirmed advocate, and it will intercede for its companion and say: “O my Lord! Reward him, for he used to act through me, stay awake at night for my sake, and endure hardship for me, so reward him!” It will be said: “Clothe him with the robe of honor and dignity!” Then the Qur’an will say: “O Lord! Give him more reward, for he used to act through me, stay awake for my sake, and endure hardship for me!” It will be said: “Crown him with the crown of honor and dignity!” Then the Qur’an will say again: “O Lord! Give him more reward, for he used to act through me, stay awake for my sake, and endure hardship for me!” It will be said: “My pleasure has been granted to him, and there will never be any displeasure upon him again!” And here the intercession of the Qur’an will end.

Uqbah bin Sa’eer (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I heard Abu Salih (may Allah have mercy on him) say: “If I were to memorize the Qur’an, and then stand (in prayer) with it for a year, that would be more beloved to me than such-and-such things, because it has reached me that it will be said to the companion of the Qur’an: ‘Recite, ascend, and recite with measured recitation!’ Thus, it is hoped that whoever has gathered the Qur’an will be among the ones brought near (to Allah).”

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who recites the Qur'an and has memorized it, his example is like that of the noble and righteous angels, and the one who recites the Qur'an but has not memorized it, and it is difficult for him to remember it, yet he continues to repeat it, for him there is a double reward."

Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Whoever recites the Qur'an with ease is counted among the honored angels, and whoever finds it difficult to recite the Qur'an and it is burdensome for him, for him there is double reward.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Safeguard the Qur'an, for it slips away from a person's heart just as a tied camel escapes when released. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is very bad for someone to say, "I have forgotten such-and-such verse," rather, in reality, he has been made to forget it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: It is very bad for any of you to say, "I have forgotten such-and-such verse," rather, in reality, he has been made to forget it. Keep memorizing the Qur'an, for it slips away from a person's chest just as tied camels break loose and run away.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Every person who is made responsible for the affairs of a group will be brought on the Day of Resurrection in a state of captivity, and only justice will release him from that captivity. And whoever recites the Qur'an and then forgets it, he will meet Allah in such a state as if his limbs are cut off.

Suwaid bin Jubalah al-Fazari (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I do not care whether I learned a surah of the Qur'an and then abandoned it, or that I am walking among the people with a severed hand.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best among you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took my hand, made me sit beside him, and taught me the Qur'an.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best among you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it to others." Abu Abdur Rahman al-Sulami (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "It is on the basis of this (hadith) that I am sitting in this place (to teach the Qur'an to people)."

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The Qur'an will intercede for its companion on the Day of Resurrection and will say: "O my Lord! You placed me in his chest, I kept him awake at night, and I restrained him from many desires, and every doer is given a reward!" Then (Allah Almighty) will say: "Stretch out your hand!" or He said: "Stretch out your right hand!" Then his hand will be filled with the pleasure of Allah, and He will never be displeased with him. Then it will be said: "Recite and ascend!" For every verse, his rank will be raised by one degree, and for every verse, he will be given a good deed.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Fudaylah bin Ubaid and Sayyiduna Tamim Dari (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever recites ten verses at night will be written among those who pray and will not be counted among the heedless. Whoever recites fifty verses will be written among Allah’s protected servants until morning. Whoever recites three hundred verses, Allah Almighty will say: 'My servant endured hardship for My sake!' And whoever recites one thousand verses, a qintar (a great reward) will be written for him, and a qintar is better than the world and everything in it, and even more than that, as much as Allah wills to grant in reward! When the Day of Resurrection comes, your Lord will say to the servant: 'Recite and ascend for every verse!' until he reaches his last verse, then Allah will say: 'Take!' The servant will stretch out his hands and say: 'O Lord! You know best!' Allah will say: 'Through this, attain everlasting life, and through this, receive blessings!'"

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Whoever recites ten verses at night will not be counted among the heedless."

The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever recites the Qur'an and recites it with correct pronunciation, then dies in that state, he will be like the martyr who is covered in blood in the path of Allah."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The one who recites the Qur'an aloud is like one who gives charity openly, and the one who recites the Qur'an quietly is like one who gives charity secretly."

Whenever Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) completed the Qur'an, he would gather his family and supplicate.

The Tabi'i Mujahid, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Whoever completes the Qur'an is given such a supplication that is not rejected.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Recite the Qur'an in the correct Arabic accent, for it is in Arabic, and after you there will come people who will recite it incorrectly, even though they will not be the best among you.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to his companions while they were reciting the Qur'an, so he said: "Recite, all of it is the Book of Allah, before there come people who will straighten it as an arrow is straightened; they will hasten and will not recite with deliberation."

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were reciting the Qur'an, and among us were non-Arabs and villagers. He said: "Recite, and every recitation is good, but soon there will come people who will straighten it like an arrow, they will rush and will not recite with deliberation."

It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Ayub (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Qur'an was revealed upon seven letters (dialects), so whichever letter (dialect) you recite in, you have recited correctly.

It is narrated from Amr bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Qur'an was revealed upon seven letters (dialects), and all of them are healing and sufficient.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the recitation and found all of them close to each other, so recite in the manner you have been taught! And avoid excess and disagreement, for it is just like someone saying: Come, «ھلم», and «تعال». («ھلم» and «تعال» both mean "come").

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard a man reciting a verse in a way different from how I had heard it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So I took him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I saw signs of displeasure on his face. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Both of you are reciting well, do not differ!"

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that one day I hastened to present myself before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he heard two men who were differing regarding a verse. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out in an angry state and said: "Beware! The people before you were destroyed because they differed in their Book."

Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to a group of people who were reciting the Qur'an and reviewing it among themselves, so he said: "What is this?" They replied: "We are reciting the Qur'an and reflecting upon it!" So he said: "Reflect upon it, but do not make mistakes."

I asked Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) about a person who learns the Arabic language in order to correct his speech and recitation of the Qur'an, so he said: "There is no harm in it, because sometimes a man recites a verse and, due to not understanding its meaning, he is destroyed."

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about a verse from the Book of Allah, so he said: "Which earth will carry me, which sky will shade me, where shall I go and what shall I do, if I say about a verse from the Book of Allah that which Allah did not intend as its meaning?!"

It was said to Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him): "Our imam makes mistakes in recitation!" So he said: "Remove him."
