Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Badr and confronted the enemy. When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, defeated the enemy, a group of Muslims pursued the enemy and began killing them, another group gathered around the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and another group took possession of the spoils of war and the camp. Then, when those who had pursued the enemy returned, they said: “We have a right to the spoils of war; we pursued the enemy and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, drove them away and defeated them at our hands.” Those who had guarded the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You have no preference over us; rather, the spoils of war are ours. We protected the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) so that no negligence from the enemy could affect him.” And those who had taken possession of the spoils of war said: “You have no superiority over us; rather, this wealth is ours. We took possession of it and safeguarded it.”
