قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُ مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ وَلِلسَّيَّارَةِ}His (Allah's) saying: {Lawful to you is the game of the sea and its food as provision for you and for travelers...}
Hadith 836

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَدِمْتُ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَسَأَلَنِي أَهْلُهَا عَمَّا يَقْذِفُ الْبَحْرُ مِنَ السَّمَكِ، فَأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِأَكْلِهِ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْتُ سَأَلْتُ عُمَرَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: مَا أَمَرْتَهُمْ ؟ فَقُلْتُ: أَمَرْتُهُمْ بِأَكْلِهِ، فَقَالَ: لَوْ قُلْتَ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ لَعَلَوْتُكَ بِالدِّرَّةِ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ عُمَرُ: { أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُ } قَالَ: صَيْدُهُ مَا اصْطِيدَ، وَطَعَامُهُ مَا رَمَى بِهِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I went to Bahrain, and the people there asked me about the ruling on a fish that the sea throws onto the land. I instructed them that it is permissible to eat it. When I returned, I asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about this matter. He asked: What ruling did you give them? I replied: I told them it is permissible to eat it. He said: If you had said anything else, I would have beaten you with a whip. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: ﴿أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُ﴾ and said: «صَيْدُهُ» is that which is hunted directly, and «طَعَامُهُ» is that which the sea throws onto the land.
