Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I went to Bahrain, and the people there asked me about the ruling on a fish that the sea throws onto the land. I instructed them that it is permissible to eat it. When I returned, I asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about this matter. He asked: What ruling did you give them? I replied: I told them it is permissible to eat it. He said: If you had said anything else, I would have beaten you with a whip. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: ﴿أُحِلَّلَكُمْصَيْدُالْبَحْرِوَطَعَامُهُ﴾ and said: «صَيْدُهُ» is that which is hunted directly, and «طَعَامُهُ» is that which the sea throws onto the land.
