Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Muqrin (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): I have sworn an oath that I will not sleep on my bed for a year. So Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the verse: ﴿O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful for you﴾, then said: Pay the expiation for your oath. Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Which thing is best for expiation? He said: Freeing a slave. He said: My slave stole my sheet and ran away with it, should I cut off his hand? He said: No, your wealth was only in the hands of some of your own people. Then he asked: My slave-girl committed adultery, should I flog her? He said: Yes, flog her fifty lashes. He asked: If she does it again? He said: Even then, flog her fifty lashes.
