Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Muqrin (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "I have made relations with my wife forbidden upon myself." So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the verse: "O you who believe! Do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you" up to "the transgressors", and said: "Free a slave." Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I recited this verse last night, and that is why I have come to you today." Then he said: "My slave has stolen my sheet." Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Your wealth has been stolen by one of your own people." Then, it seems, Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "My slave-girl committed adultery." He said: "Flog her." He said: "She is unmarried." He replied: "Her Islam is her protection (i.e., chastity)."
