Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We were in the chamber of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), with us were Ata bin Abi Rabah, some mawali, Ubaid bin Umair, and a few Arabs. So we discussed the meaning of "lamas" (touch). I and Ata said that "lamas" means touching with the hand, while Ubaid bin Umair and the Arabs said that it means intercourse. I said: The matter of virtue in this issue is close to you. Then I went to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he was sitting on a couch. He asked: "What happened?" I said: We were discussing about "lamas", some said it is touching with the hand, and some said it is intercourse. He asked: "Who said it is intercourse?" I said: The Arabs. Then he asked: "And who said it is touching with the hand?" I said: The mawali. So he asked: "Which group were you with?" I said: With the mawali. So he laughed and said three times: "The mawali have prevailed, the mawali have prevailed." Then he said: Lamas, mas, and mubasharat, all of them ultimately mean intercourse, but Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, uses whatever expression He wills for whatever meaning He wills.
