Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about *kalalah* (a person who dies leaving neither ascendants nor descendants as heirs). So, Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) waited for a while, and when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had put on his clothes, she asked him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) explained the ruling to her and said: "Who told you to ask about this? Was it Umar? I do not think he will be able to understand it. Is the verse of summer, that is, the verse revealed about *kalalah*, not sufficient for them?" Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: That verse is: ﴿وَإِنْكَانَرَجُلٌيُورَثُكَلَالَةً﴾ "And if a man is inherited as *kalalah*..." But Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) could not understand it and prayed: "O Allah! Whoever You grant understanding, he will understand, for I have not been able to understand it."
