Hadith 53

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ مُؤَدِّبُ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ: " اقْرَأْ عَلَيَّ " ! قَالَ: أَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَيْكَ أُنْزِلَ ؟ ! فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَسْمَعَهُ مِنْ غَيْرِي ! فَقَرَأَ سُورَةَ النِّسَاءِ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: { فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَى هَؤُلاءِ شَهِيدًا } قَالَ: فَغَمَزَنِي، فَنَظَرْتُ، فَإِذَا دُمُوعُهُ تَنْحَدِرُ .
Ubaidah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "Recite the Qur'an to me!" He replied: "O Messenger of Allah! How can I recite the Qur'an to you when it has been revealed to you?!" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I like to hear it from others!" So he began to recite Surah An-Nisa, and when he reached this verse: ﴿فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَى هَؤُلاءِ شَهِيدًا﴾ [النساء: 41] (Translation: "Then how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness, and We bring you as a witness over these?"), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) signaled to me, and I saw that tears were flowing from his eyes.
