Hadith 51

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الْمَسْعُودِيِّ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ - أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَهُ: " اقْرَأْ عَلَيَّ " ! فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ: أَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَيْكَ أُنْزِلَ ؟ ! فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَسْمَعَهُ مِنْ غَيْرِي ! فَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ اللهِ سُورَةَ النِّسَاءِ، حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغَ: { فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَى هَؤُلاءِ شَهِيدًا } فَاسْتَعْبَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَأَمْسَكَ عَبْدُ اللهِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Recite the Qur'an to me!" I said: O Messenger of Allah! Should I recite it to you, while it has been revealed to you?! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I like to hear it from others!" So I recited Surah An-Nisa, until I reached this verse: ﴿فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَى هَؤُلاءِ شَهِيدًا﴾ [النساء: 41] (Translation: "Then how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness, and We bring you as a witness over these?") At this, the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to shed tears, and I fell silent.
