حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، قَالَ: كَانَتْ بَدْرٌ مَتْجَرًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاعَدَ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ أَنْ يَلْقَاهُ بِهِ، فَلَقِيَهُمْ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ بِهَا جَمْعًا عَظِيمًا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، فَنَدَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ النَّاسَ، فَأَتَوْا بَدْرًا، فَلَمْ يَلْقَوْا بِهَا أَحَدًا، فَرَجَعَ الْجَبَانُ، وَمَضَى الْجَرِيءُ، فَتَسَوَّقُوا بِهَا، فَلَمْ يَلْقَوْا أَحَدًا، فَنَزَلَتِ {الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَانًا، وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ فَانْقَلَبُوا بِنِعْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَضْلٍ} [آل عمران: 174] "
It is narrated from Hazrat Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him): Badr was a commercial fair in the time of ignorance. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had promised to meet Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan there. When the Muslims were informed about the large number of the enemy, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the companions out. But no one was found there. The brave advanced, the cowardly stayed behind. Allah Almighty revealed this verse: «الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ».
