حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كَتَبَ إِلَيْهِمْ: «أَنِ اجْعَلُوا بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ الْعَدُوِّ مَفَازًا»
Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote: "Keep a desert as a distance between yourselves and the enemy."

Name: Abu Bakr ibn Amr ibn Utbah ibn Mas’ud al-Thaqafi
Lineage: Thaqafi, that is, from the same tribe to which al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah and al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf also belonged.
Generation: Tabi’i
Reliability: Ibn Hajar describes him as “thiqah faqih min fuqaha’ al-Madinah” (reliable and among the jurists of Madinah). Imam al-Dhahabi has also mentioned him in a positive manner, and hadiths narrated from him are found in the Sahihayn (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). ◄ Details about him can be found in the books of rijal (biographical works), such as Tahdhib al-Kamal, Taqrib al-Tahdhib, and Siyar A’lam al-Nubala’.
