حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ: لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ بَدْرٍ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّ فُلَانًا غَلَّ قَطِيفَةً مِنَ الْمَغْنَمِ، فَسَأَلَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «هَلْ فَعَلْتَ؟» قَالَ: لَا، فَنَظَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ الَّذِي أَخْبَرَهُ، فَقَالَ: «احْفِرُوا هَاهُنَا»، فَحَفَرُوا، فَاسْتَخْرَجُوا الْقَطِيفَةَ فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، اسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: «دَعُونَا مِنَ الْأَخِرِ»
On the day of Badr, a man complained to the Prophet (peace be upon him) that so-and-so had hidden a cloak from the spoils of war. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: "Did you do this?" He denied it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Dig here." The cloak was found, so the companions said: "Pray for him." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Leave him."
Brief Explanation
The hadith is hasan li-ghayrihi, meaning that although there is weakness in its chain (Amr ibn Dinar did not hear directly from the Companions, but he lived after the era of the Companions. The narration is not mursal, rather it is mawquf [Amr ibn Dinar says that he heard it]), yet its content is sound in reason and logic, and it is a clear expression of Islamic morals and the system of justice.
