Brief Explanation
Ata bin Abi Rabah is a Tabi‘i, and here he is narrating a mursal report from Umar bin Khattab radi Allahu anhu. A mursal narration is considered weak in the principles of hadith, unless there is another strong corroboration or supporting evidence present. ➤ Issue number ➋: The narration of Isma‘il bin ‘Ayyash from Ibn Jurayj ➔ Regarding Isma‘il bin ‘Ayyash (d. 181 AH), the rule among the hadith scholars is: “When he narrates from the Syrians (Shamis), he is reliable (thiqah). But when he narrates from the Hijazis, Iraqis, or other non-Syrians (such as Ibn Jurayj, who is Makki), he becomes weak.” ➔ Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal said: If he narrates from the people of his own land, then it is sound; but if he narrates from others, then there is some weakness in him. (al-Jarh wa al-Ta‘dil li Ibn Abi Hatim 2/129) ➔ And Ibn Ma‘in said: If he narrates from the people of Sham, he is reliable; but if he narrates from the people of Hijaz, he is weak. (Mizan al-I‘tidal 1/274) ➤ Application here: Ibn Jurayj, that is, ‘Abd al-Malik bin ‘Abd al-‘Aziz bin Jurayj, is a Makki (i.e., Hijazi) narrator. Isma‘il bin ‘Ayyash is narrating from him. Therefore, this narration also becomes weak, because Isma‘il bin ‘Ayyash’s narration from the Hijazis is weak.
