بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي قَتْلِ الرُّهْبَانِ وَالشَّمَامِسَةِChapter on what is reported regarding killing monks and priests
Hadith 3812

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقْتُلُ الشَّمَامِسَةُ مِنَ الْعَدُوِّ، وَيَقُولُ: " لَأَنْ أَقْتُلَ رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَقْتُلَ سَبْعِينَ مِنْ غَيْرِهِمْ، وَذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ: {فَقَاتِلُوا أَئِمَّةَ الْكُفْرِ إِنَّهُمْ لَا أَيْمَانَ لَهُمْ} [التوبة: 12] "
Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) used to kill the priests of the enemy and would say: "Their killing is more beloved to me than the killing of seventy others, because Allah says: «فقاتلوا أئمة الكفر»."
Brief Explanation
This narration is mawquf: that is, it is the statement and action of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu himself, and is not attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. It has been correlated with the interpretation of a verse of the Qur'an.
Benefit: The content is supported by the general principles of the Shari‘ah: the killing of the leaders and prominent figures among the disbelievers is of greater importance, because with their elimination, the strength of the disbelievers is broken. The verse of Surah al-Tawbah { فَقَاتِلُوا أَئِمَّةَ الْكُفْرِ إِنَّهُمْ لَا أَيْمَانَ لَهُمْ } also supports this.
