Thumamah bin Uthal was brought as a captive to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "If you wish, you may kill him; if you wish, you may release him for ransom; if you wish, you may set him free without ransom; or if you wish, you may accept Islam." Thumamah replied: "If you show kindness, you will show kindness to a noble person; if you take ransom, you will take ransom from a noble person; if you set free, you will set free a noble person; and if you try to force me to become Muslim, I will not accept." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) set him free. Later, Sayyiduna Thumamah (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Now no wheat or dates will go to the Quraysh until Allah and His Messenger permit." The Quraysh wrote a letter to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) requesting mercy and said: "You command the maintaining of ties of kinship; we have been destroyed, and so have our families." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wrote to Sayyiduna Thumamah (may Allah be pleased with him): «حرم الله (یعنی مکہ) اور اس کی امانت کے لیے ان کا سامان جانے دو، اور ان پر پابندی نہ لگاؤ۔» Thus, Sayyiduna Thumamah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent them grain.
