قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {وَلا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِيمَا عَرَّضْتُمْ بِهِ مِنْ خِطْبَةِ النِّسَاءِ أَوْ أَكْنَنْتُمْ فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ عَلِمَ اللهُ أَنَّكُمْ سَتَذْكُرُونَهُنَّ وَلَكِنْ لا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا إِلا أَنْ تَقُولُوا قَوْلا مَعْرُوفًا}His saying, Exalted is He: {And there is no blame upon you for that to which you [indirectly] allude concerning a proposal to women or for what you conceal within yourselves. Allah knows that you will have them in mind. But do not promise them secretly except for saying a proper saying.}
Hadith 377

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ - فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: { وَلَكِنْ لا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا } - قَالَ: لَا تَأْخُذْ مِيثَاقَهَا أَلَّا تَنْكِحَ غَيْرَكَ، وَلَا تُوجِبِ الْعُقْدَةَ حَتَّى تَنْقَضِيَ الْعِدَّةُ .
Shu'bi, may Allah have mercy on him, regarding the statement of Allah the Exalted: "But do not make a secret promise to them" said: Its meaning is that you should not take a pledge from a woman during her waiting period that she will not marry anyone except you, nor should you make a definite decision of marriage before the waiting period ends.
