Hazrat Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that As-Sa'ib bin Al-Aqra' (may Allah be pleased with him) was an official over a region on behalf of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). While digging the ground there, buried gold was found. As-Sa'ib said: "I see no right for myself in this wealth except for the Commander of the Faithful; it is neither fay', nor jizyah, nor charity." So he called the people for consultation and then sent this wealth to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When the messenger reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) with the wealth, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the messenger: "What is this that you have brought? This is not something that pleases me." The messenger said: "O Commander of the Faithful! My camel has become weak, please provide me with a mount." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If you were not a messenger, I would not give you anything." Then Sayyiduna Umar wrote to the people of water that they should provide him with a mount from water to water, and he summoned As-Sa'ib bin Al-Aqra' to Madinah. When As-Sa'ib (may Allah be pleased with him) reached Madinah, he presented himself before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). At that time, there was a bowl in front of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in which there was a hard, thick piece of bread and a lean piece of camel meat. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Eat!" So As-Sa'ib ate a little but could not eat much. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Eat! This is not like the white flour of your Iraq which you eat!" Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked who was at the door. The answer came: shepherds. He asked: "Are they black?" It was said: Yes. He said: "Call them in." So they came and began to eat with Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) until their fingers were licking the edges of the bowl. Afterwards, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked As-Sa'ib: "What is this wealth that you sent?" As-Sa'ib said: "This was a buried treasure found, it was not fay', nor jizyah, nor charity. I thought no one had a right to it except the Commander of the Faithful." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah bless you! Who made me entitled to it while I am in Madinah and the Muslims are lined up against the enemies?" As-Sa'ib said: "O Commander of the Faithful! I have made this lawful for you." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Do you recognize the seal of your messenger?" Then the seal was opened and strange and wondrous things came out. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I swear to you, take this wealth and distribute it among the Muslims in Kufa." Hazrat Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) says that he saw As-Sa'ib taking out pieces of gold and distributing them among the Muslims until everyone was given.
