Hadith 3648

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِلَالٍ، أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ: «لَا تَغُلُّوا، وَلَا تَغْدِرُوا، وَإِذَا نَزَلْتَ بِقَوْمٍ فَادْعُهُمْ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ فَإِنْ أَسْلَمُوا فَادْعُهُمْ إِلَى أَنْ تَنْقِلَهُمْ إِلَى دَارِ الْهِجْرَةِ، فَإِنْ أَبَوْا فَإِنَّهُمْ مِثْلُ أَعْرَابِ الْمُسْلِمِينِ، لَيْسَ لَهُمْ فِي الْفَيْءِ شَيْءٌ، فَإِنْ أَبَوْا فَاسْتَعِنْ بِاللَّهِ عَلَى قِتَالِهِمْ، وَإِنْ أَرَادُوكَ عَلَى أَنْ يَنْزِلُوا عَلَى حُكْمِ اللَّهِ فَلَا تَفْعَلْ فَإِنَّكَ لَا تَدْرِي أَتُصِيبُ حُكْمَ اللَّهِ أَمْ لَا، وَلَكِنْ يُنْزَلُوا عَلَى حُكْمِكَ وَحُكْمِ قَوْمِكَ، وَإِنْ أَرَادُوكَ قَوْمٌ عَلَى أَنْ يَنْزِلُوا عَلَى أَنَّ لَهُمْ ذِمَّةَ اللَّهِ فَلَا تَفْعَلَنَّ، وَلَكِنْ أَعْطِهِمْ ذِمَّتَكَ وَذِمَّةَ آبَائِكَ؛ فَإِنَّكُمْ إِنْ تُخْفِرُوا بِذِمَّتِكُمْ وَذِمَّةِ آبَائِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَنْ تُخْفِرُوا بِذِمَّةِ اللَّهِ، وَلَا تُعْطِيَنَّ قَوْمًا عَهْدَ اللَّهِ»
It is narrated from Amr bin Harith, may Allah have mercy on him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: "Do not betray, do not deceive, when you come to a people, first invite them to Islam. If they accept Islam, then invite them to migrate to the land of Hijrah. If they refuse, then they will be like the Bedouin Muslims; they will have no share in the spoils of war. Then if they refuse, seek help from Allah and fight them. And if they say that they want judgment according to Allah's command, do not accept, because you do not know what Allah's command is. Rather, make them accept judgment according to your and your people's decision. And if they say that they want to be under Allah's protection, do not grant it, but give them your own and your forefathers' protection, because breaking your own protection is better than breaking Allah's protection. And never grant any people protection on Allah's covenant."
