Hadith 3580

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ ضَمْضَمِ بْنِ زُرْعَةَ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ، قَالَ: لَمَّا قَدِمَ وَفْدُ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ عَلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَسَأَلَهُمْ فَقَالَ: «كَيْفَ تَجْعَلُونَ نَفَقَاتِكُمْ؟» قَالُوا: بِسَبْعِ مِائَةٍ، قَالَ: «كَذَلِكَ فَافْعَلُوا، وَإِذَا أَصَابَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَهْلَهُ فَلْيَحْتَسِبْ وَلَدًا ذَكَرًا، مُصِيبًا أَوْ مُخْطِئًا، أَعْطَاهُ اللَّهُ إِيَّاهُ أَوْ مَنَعَهُ»
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the delegation from Syria: "How do you manage your expenses?" They said: "With seven hundred dirhams." So he said: "Continue like that, and when you go to your wife, intend that a child be born, whether it happens or not."
