Hadith 3479

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو شَيْبَةَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ، قَالَ: نا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا» قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ: «ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ: «ثُمَّ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ» وَايْمُ اللَّهِ لَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي قُلْتُ: فَأَيُّ الذُّنُوبِ أَعْظَمُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: «أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا، وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ» قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ: «أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ» قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ: «أَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ» قَالَ: فَمَا مَكَثْنَا إِلَّا يَسِيرًا حَتَّى أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مِصْدَاقَهَا {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا} [الفرقان: 68]
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Which deed is the best?" He (peace be upon him) said: "To perform the prayer at its proper time." I asked: "Then which one?" He said: "To treat parents with kindness." I asked: "Then which one?" He said: "Jihad in the way of Allah." Then Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "By Allah! If I had asked further, he would have told me more." I asked: "Which sin is the greatest in the sight of Allah?" He said: "That you associate a partner with Allah, while He created you." I asked: "Then which one?" He said: "That you kill your child out of fear that he will eat with you." I asked: "Then which one?" He said: "That you commit adultery with your neighbor's wife." Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "We had not sat for long when Allah Almighty revealed this verse in confirmation of it: «وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ» Translation: And those who do not call upon any other god along with Allah, nor kill a soul which Allah has forbidden except by right, nor commit adultery. [الفرقان: 68]"
