أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا هُشَيْمٌ، أنا خَالِدٌ الْحَذَّاءُ، أنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، قَالَ: أُتِيَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فِي غُلَامٍ يَتِيمٍ، فَخَيَّرَهُ فَاخْتَارَ أُمَّهُ، وَتَرَكَ عَمَّهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: «أَمَا إِنَّ جَدْبَ أُمِّكَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنْ خِصْبِ عَمِّكَ» قَالَ الصَّائِغُ بِالدَّالِ
A case concerning an orphan child was brought to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), so he gave the child the choice. The child chose his mother and left his uncle. Upon this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Surely, your mother's poverty and hardship are better for you than your uncle's affluence and capability."
