بَابُ الْغُلَامِ بَيْنَ الْأَبَوَيْنِ أَيُّهُمَا أَحَقُّ بِهِChapter on the boy between his parents—who has more right to him
Hadith 3453

أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا هُشَيْمٌ، أنا عُثْمَانُ الْبَتِّيُّ، أنا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، أَنَّ جَدَّهُ أَسْلَمَ عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنْ شِئْتُمَا خَيَّرْتُمَاهُ»، وَأَقَامَ الْأَبَ فِي نَاحِيَةٍ وَالْأُمَّ فِي نَاحِيَةٍ، ثُمَّ خَيَّرَ الْغُلَامَ، فَانْطَلَقَ نَحْوَ أُمِّهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِهِ» فَرَجَعَ الْغُلَامُ إِلَى أَبِيهِ
Uthman al-Batti (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Abdul Hameed bin Salamah Ansari (may Allah have mercy on him) that his grandfather accepted Islam during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If both of you (mother and father) wish, then give the child the choice." So the father was placed on one side and the mother on the other, then the child was given the choice, and he went towards his mother. Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: "O Allah! Guide him." So the child returned to his father.
