A man came to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) who had mistakenly had intercourse with a woman who was not lawful for him. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Give the man the prescribed punishment in secret, and the woman the prescribed punishment in public."
