أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّ صَفِيَّةَ امْرَأَةَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَمَّا مَاتَ عَنْهَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ اشْتَكَتْ عَيْنَيْهَا، فَكَانَتْ تَقْطُرُ فِيهَا الصَّبِرَ "
Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: "Safiyyah, the wife of Abdullah, applied collyrium of sabr to her eyes after her husband's death."
Brief Explanation
Explanation: This narration is authentic in its chain of transmission and strong in terms of juristic practice, and from it the following principles are derived: During the waiting period (‘iddah) of widowhood, a woman should refrain from adornment, but if there is a medical necessity, the use of non-adorned medication is permissible. The action of Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abdullah is a practical example of the juristic insight of the pious predecessors (salaf salihin).
